99 Bottles of Rum on the wall...

*shrug* I couldn't think of a blog title. I've hit the special rum a little too hard. MM, take it away before someone gets hurt.

Music choice of the week: (Something y'all might have actually heard of.)

Got It Made- Seether- Disclaimer II

Since Terri had to go and open up the "motto" topic this week (And I'm still pretty sure you were trying to trick me, pirate.), then Hellie follows it up with the changing trends, I might as well pretend like I know something about writing.

Yeah. *laughing*   Right.  I went rogue on this ship a long time ago.

I don't plot. *huff* I don't care what you say, Ter.

I don't admit to "feelings" and whatever kind of crap you're trying to sell me as general female emotion. *crossing arms over chest* At least not in my outside voice.

*eye roll* And I sure as hell don't cry. I'd rather die than be caught crying.

You may think, why this little rant?

I spent the weekend with Kiki and Dex. Always an adventure into repression and denial. I can admit while we're not supposed to write heroines like ourselves, Kiki has a lot of my emotional characteristics. And writing a character that reminds you a lot of yourself in a way is, well, annoying and trying and very challenging to make it seem original. This is where Kiki's opposite comes into play. The Yang to her Yin. In times when I'm so annoyed with Kiki that I can't stand it, I just insert my annoyance into Dex's lines and everything is kosher.

Terri spoke a little on having a motto for your characters to help compass your character's motivation and I've always known that Kiki's "motto" is- I don't deserve it. Sacrifice is the only way. Whereas, Dex's "motto" is- I take what's mine and damn the consequences.

I like Dex. He's motto makes me grin in the most wicked way.

Now (and you might want to get a feather bed for Terri to pass out on) I'm about to admit something that I definitely don't associate with most of my heroes.

*deep breath*

Dex isn't a true alpha alpha.

*mass occurrences of fainting*

*Chance jumps overboard*

*Lisa throws up*

Now, I know that you're thinking Dex's motto is a bit on the alpha side of things. But stay with me. For the first time ever, I actually put some thought into this. (Not plotting, mind you. I've got my eyes on you three, Terri, Marn and Hal. Sneaky pirates.)

Kiki is a true alpha heroine. She stiff-arms emotion like a pro. You can't find a crack in her emotional guard armor. You can't find a way to get to her through others because she doesn't allow anyone close enough. You think you know her, but you don't- you know what she wants you to know. She is a rough and tumble girl. Paring her up with another alpha would only weaken her stance as lead alpha of her pack (not to mention probably WWIII). And I can't have that.

So, *deep breathing* I dreamed up Dex.

Dex and Kiki have always been paired in another series that I planned before the Sadie series. Kiki was the pretty unattainable girl Dex secretly loved from afar. Dex is the man that Kiki secretly loves but she could never forgive herself if she hurt him and she knows she will. She knows her emotional detachment from life would eventually kill the man she loves from afar. So she keeps him at a distance and (in my mind) he's been quietly grooming her slowly but surely to let him in.

Sneakiness, I can admire. I can respect that. You can ask Mattycakes. He said he tried all sorts of things to get my attention but the only way he got to me was by sneakiness (I can't resist a good head game. *pause* Wait... I didn't mean it like that.). I was damned sure I wasn't going to fall for him. In fact, I was going to move away from him to prove it to myself that I didn't need anyone.

By the time I realized how far I'd fallen, it was too late to run and I didn't want to. Once you get a taste of something in your life you've been starving for and didn't realize it, it's hard to let it go. I want Kiki to have this same realization to complete her character arc. It won't happen in one book, mind you; but the gradual acceptance of the little things that Dex does for her will eventually make her realize that while she's been looking at the big picture and trying to keep him out of it, he's already woven himself so deep into her life, she can't live without him.

I've always been at the realization that two alphas aren't made for each other. You don't have to be an alpha to dominate an alpha female. You just have to show her a lot of respect. Get underneath her skin and make her think about you and the possibilities. And an alpha females needs someone in her life to soften her, otherwise she eventually gets so far detached she can't come back. If the hero is so unyielding in his own emotions, how can you soften the pair of them together if you can't show them that it's okay to admit to a few feelings and have the need of someone in your life that you can count on? The story would get stagnant and stale if you had to read about them constantly butting heads over something. There has to be push and pull to keep interest and growth.

What characteristics do you look for in an alpha female versus the beta female? What are some pros and cons of each that you find irk (or admire) while you're reading? Any favorite alpha females out there in TV or Fiction? How about great alpha females and their men- any examples?

Wait a f*ckin' minute! Who wrote this hear rule 'bout ...not supposed to write heroines like ourselves...!!!!!

Uh uh. Gonna fight wit' ya 'bout this, Sin-ister. Don't bother me none 'bout yer not havin' an alpha hero. I did the same, fact is, I think we be writin' the same characters now and then...

*crooked eye

But not write yerself in her lead? Hell, me leads be littered wit' bits a' me. Me every character be littered wit' me. How else can I write them authentically!? Who else do I know better than me?

I think I know me... I could be writin' someone else...but I think it's me...

I'm headin' fer that special rum...

*head down, mumblin'. head shakin'...

Oh, alpha females...

(By the way, crew... It's not even 11pm on the wild coast, which be why I go comment crazy then disappear...till nearly noon yer time...sigh.)

Long as the alpha female don't act like a male...I'm cool wit' 'em. They can wise crack (always like that), they can kick butt (right on!), they can rescue the hero (I love that! Love, love, LOVE THAT!)...long as they don't sound like a man.

I like Temperance on Bones. She be alpha. Sully be alpha... But it works because they complement each other.

haleigh said...

I haven't written an alpha female, but mainly because I'm *so* beta. I mean seriously, I'm the biggest push-over in the world. It's sad.

But I gotta say, I did that where I wrote a heroine like me, and I hated her. I kept trying to kill her off *g* (I don't even want to know what that says about me).

I was going to say Bones too, for an Alpha female. And Booth is alpha in a sensitive sort of way (or maybe he's gamma)so I agree that it works.

But this leads to an interesting question. Can you be alpha and be "in touch" with your emotions? I'd always thought of alpha characters as someone who didn't let their emotions rule their actions, not necessarily someone who wouldn't feel or express emotion. Hmm, that made no sense. I need more coffee :)

terrio said...

I'm early! Yes, I arrived at work nearly an HOUR before my usual time. No idea how that happened. (Though it had something to do with a cat determined to wake me up early. Grrrrr.....)

Chance - You are too funny. Since you've been my therapist and help me realize Celi is me, just skinnier, I'll let you and Sin fight that one out.

Hal - This is where the "What is an alpha anyway?" debate comes up. I don't think being alpha has anything to do with emotions. (And I'm pretty sure Janga will back me up on this one.) Alpha means leader. It means others have a natural tendency to follow. An alpha is good under pressure, smart, in charge. But keeping your head in moments of crisis doesn't mean you don't have emotions.

There are times that an alpha shows their power, lets others know he/she is in charge. But again, this has nothing to do with not having feelings or emotions. In fact, I'd venture to say an alpha feels very strongly for those he/she leads.

terrio said...

Forgot to say, I think this is the most times my name has ever appeared in a blog. LOL! You're thinking about things. My job here is done. *G*

I think several female characters on television are alphas these days. Bones, as mentioned, but also Kyra Sedgewick's character on The Closer, Holly Hunter's in Saving Grace (though that character is a hot mess), and Arquette on Medium. The irony is, I don't watch any of these shows. :)

Oh, Kate on Castle is an alpha and I do watch that one. But I watch it for Castle (Nathon Fillion *sigh*) and he's a total beta. LOL!

Marnee Jo said...

Sin, I love this blog. And I would never ever conceive to make you into anything like a plotter.

Though I'm a bit of a beta myself at times, so maybe I'm trying to infiltrate a little at a time. You have to watch betas sometimes, you know.

But seriously, your thoughts at the end about how a hero has to deal with an alpha female really got me started thinking about Ice and Marc's story. Because Ice is hard core alpha. But I think Marc's gamma enough for her. Sorta southern boy rough on the outside, sweet and gooshy on the inside.

My favorite alpha in fiction right now is Xhex, from JR Wards stuff. (I really love Ward these days.)

haleigh said...

Ohh, I love the idea of Marc being a little squishy on the inside to balance out Ice. She's definitely an alpha female who needs softening. Why do I have a feeling that Kiki and Ice are a lot alike? *g*

Sin said...

You need a little squishy on the inside to balance out an alpha female. :)

I think Ice might be tougher than Kiki. Kiki's world is pretty much crumbling all around her and she's one of those people who keeps trying to patch it.

I think Cin and Ice might be closer in alphaness. Ice is still f*cking hardcore. I adore her.

Sin said...

I love Xhex too. I have a bit of a girl crush on her. And Baby Bang in Tara Janzen's crazy series. Baby Bang is hot and drives a hella nice ride.

I would love to say that Ivy from Kim Harrison's books is alpha, but as much as Ivy just takes control, she still allows others to dominate her.

I actually watched some of Castle the other night, Ter, and I found that I enjoyed it. Kate is really alpha.

Sin said...

And I just got told I'm posting comments too fast. LOL

Sin said...

I'm getting all out of order.

Sin said...

Okay, and while I agree that not necessarily Alpha has anything to do with "emotions" as much as being able to lead, you don't find many people who can lead a group who are sensitive and really in touch with their feelings. In my personal opinion, alpha's are super in touch with their "emotions" because they know how to control it, push it down, compartmentalize them. You can't do that if you don't know what it is.

Sin said...

I'm finding that writing two first person POV heroines takes a lot of thought to weave the stories together and make it work. It's not like I didn't think I was gonna have to put some thought into it. I mean, that's what all those short stories are about really.

Sin said...

Okay, I can't remember the definition of a gamma. I know it's the inbetween of an alpha and a beta. I think Dex is between an alpha and a gamma. An alphma? A gampha? *laughing*

terrio said...

I see the rum is still flowing...

Sin said...

Yeah, I spiked my smoothie. *humming in the crow's nest*

Sin said...

Hal- "Can you be alpha and be “in touch” with your emotions? I’d always thought of alpha characters as someone who didn’t let their emotions rule their actions, not necessarily someone who wouldn’t feel or express emotion."

My definition of an alpha is a bit like yours. I always assumed that an alpha was a character who didn't let their emotions rule their actions. But it changes a bit when I get to my females because as females, we usually let emotion drive our actions. So instead of learning to deal with our emotions, it is repressed to deal with at a later time.

I mean, when I write Ranger (and he's pretty alpha) I still allow him to express emotion, he still has feelings. But when writing Kiki, she feels it, she denies it and she goes numb. It's kind of like she takes it in, she takes a deep breath and she lets it go. But instead, she doesn't let it go, and it simmers on low until she can really think about it.

Sin said...

MM, seriously, take the rum away.

I dunno. I think at times I'm crude enough to sound like a guy. *shrug* I don't know what that barrier would be. Example?

I love when the heroine rescues the hero. I'm writing a part now that Dex and Kiki went to do some snooping together and Dex wanted Kiki to let him handle it and Kiki told Dex where to go that he needed to stay out of her way and in their arguing Kiki gets "hurt" and Dex ends up nursing her (very sarcastically) through the night.

Hellie said...

I love Dex & Kiki's mottos. I identify with Kiki's; and Dex's just cracks me up.

From the bits I've read of Dex--and heard of him, he pushes the limits of beta. I know with Kiki being the alpha--and she's ALPHA--he was going to have to be a different breed or otherwise they'd kill each other. And Kiki would win.

But Dex seems more Gamma--or whatever Machivellian version of male that's not really beta and not really alpha. He struck me as like, "No, I'm not alpha enough to top your alpha, but I'm more patient and sneakier than you--and I will win and you'll never even know when it happened." (But I could be wrong.)

Sin said...

He is. Dex is very very sneaky.

Sabrina said...

I love Alpha heroines!

Sin mentioned Ivy from Kim Harrison, but I might argue that Rachel is the alpha - or also one. That provides a good bit of tension in their relationship - both alphas who don't know how to bend.

Sin, I started a Harlequin Blaze last night that is awesome and you might want to read. It perfectly handles the "in love from afar for years" and the heronine has no idea that he has been helping her to become a new woman and let herself live again. It's Shaken and Stirred by Kathleen O'Reilly.

Here's the website if you are interested.

http://www.kathleenoreilly.com/shakenandstirred.html

Sin said...

Sabrina, I agree about Rachel. I think she's pretty alpha herself. I think they spend time trading off back and forth in their alphaness.

Of course, I love Newt. She is uber alpha.

I will look this book up. *running off to the library website*

Marnee Jo said...

Awh, yay, I'm so glad you love Ice. :) We'll see how she plays out. :)

Hellie said...

Alpha females--I expect my alpha females to be a lot like Sin's. Or Anita Blake. They have emotions--but they don't discuss them--and in times of crisis, they block them completely and go a sort of numb until the end of the job. And they never, ever just fall apart and start crying. If anything, they just get more pissed off.

Favorite Alpha Females:

I liked Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett). She was a good one.

I believe Elinor from Sense & Sensibility was the alpha of her crew--though she was a quiet alpha. But she was leader of her family; and she was very good at keeping her emotions separate from what needed to be done, sacrificing for the greater good; and guiding her family. (I'm speaking of movie version; I couldn't tell you from book version.)

Marianne--not really a leader or a person of sacrifice, but definitely someone who knew what she wanted and went after it. She had alpha tendencies, but because emotion ruled so much of her decisions and behavior, I don't think she was alpha-alpha. I don't think she was very beta either. I don't really of betas as "emotional tornadoes" as Marianne seemed to be.

Oh, in the Hermione and Ron pairing: Hermione is the alpha and Ron is the beta--and I love them together. *LOL* Well, Hermione is a little emotional...but she's definitely the leader of that pair because I don't know if Ron could dress properly otherwise... But Ron can be leader too...and can be surprising.

hal said...

Sin - But instead, she doesn’t let it go, and it simmers on low until she can really think about it.

I love that. That's what I'm trying to accomplish with Naomi, my current heroine, but I don't do alpha female well. I have a CP at school who said she spent most of her time cowering in fear. Which is *not* alpha. So I'm going back and making her buck up *g*

hal said...

Gampha. LMAO!

Sin said...

Hellie, yes! Just like Anita. I expect my alpha females to be like Anita. You must get more pissed off rather than fall apart.

Sin said...

Buck up. Tell Naomi to put her big girl panties on and deal with it.

Sin said...

I heart Ice.

Sin said...

Hm, now that the rum is starting to wear off, gampha looks a bit like grandpa. LOL

hal said...

*snort*

somebody needs more rum *g*

Hellie said...

Gampha is hilarious.

I think that's why I stick with the Anita Blake series even if occasionally the books become one big orgyfest with no subplot other than another orgy. I'd rather have a gruesome murder to solve--and the orgyfest as a subplot. All the while though, Anita is Anita. She does have emotions because we know all about them, but she doesn't share them--unless forced--and the men in her life are so much more beta than she is.

I think what is interesting is that though Anita is the stronger character--the one most likely to save any of the others and its basically expected of her, the men (betas) are presented in such a way that they almost seem stronger or as strong as Anita because they are able to process their emotions and not repress them. It's interesting to see that balance.

Sin said...

Pretty soon the only thing I'm gonna be able to type is a bunch of slurred words that have to do with rum and grandpas.

Sin said...

Laurell K. Hamilton is a genius in her own right.

Melissa said...

I must have some kind of mind block on pinning down characters by alpha or beta. I just can't do it. :) I mean, some writers plot and some don't (hmm, I heard this debate somewhere before), but, whether I'm off base and comparing apples to oranges, it's the same thing in my head about alpha or beta. Why can't there be both in the same character? Like in that game Scruples with questions (i.e., would you tell a friend if you saw her husband having lunch with another woman?) Yes, no, or it depends. I always wanted to answer "It depends." There's always a factor...how good of a friend is it? Did you know the woman and know it was a work colleage?, etc. etc.

I latched on to the concept of motto and I love how Sin decribed it as "to help compass your character’s motivation." I can also see how knowing your character is alpha or beta is another compass. I'll have to think about it some more. LOL

Sin said...

Melissa, the gamma talk is the trying to pin down the inbetween an alpha and a beta character. I think we all have our own classifications for what each represents to us as a writer so I think you just have to think about what type of characteristics you write into your heroine and hero and that will tell you if they take charge or they follow.

Melissa said...

Good point, Sin. :)

Sin said...

I just make stuff up as I go. LOL

Hellie said...

I must have some kind of mind block on pinning down characters by alpha or beta.

I think it's hard to pin because no one person is one thing all the time. So even your alpha is going to go beta on you at some point; every beta has an alpha moment. I think you have to go with, what traits do my characters show most consistently? Are they leaders or followers? Do they ask permission or do they get it later when it's too late to do anything about it? Does circumstance happen to them or do they make circumstances happen?

I don't know if this is necessarily true, but I think of alphas as those who ACT and betas who REACT. Betas seem to me to be the kind to roll with whatever and make the best of it. Alphas would never let Fate have that much control over their lives--they'd ACT first and then react according.

Betas are the kind who don't go looking for trouble, but will REACT if it's thrown in their path--and then act accordingly to solve the problem.

(This could be way off though because in Heroes' Journies, heroes are basically always the type to refuse to go on the journey--and it's only when they have no other choice that they go on the journey.)

Melissa said...

Sin, my favorite quote in your blog is, "Once you get a taste of something in your life you’ve been starving for and didn’t realize it, it’s hard to let it go."

That's a powerful realization for a strong heroine. :) I read a historical western story once about a very damaged heroine -- not your traditional romance because she was a prostitute - and not a former prostitute but a working prostitute (at the beginning). Then she came to live on the hero's ranch (can't remember how) and talk about PATIENCE in the hero. And often she would run, even back to the brothel. Always he would go get her back. She definitely had the "I don't deserve it" motto. I recall that the ending didn't work for me - too MUCH of a character arc to turn her into a missionary at the end! (she ran one last time and then the hero found her in a missionary) - - but it left an impression. I'd still say that BOTH were mostly alpha characters though. :)

Melissa said...

Helli - that's a great way to think of it, alphas ACT rather than REACT. And then we can mess with them and throw them something out of their control. LOL

hal said...

A missionary? Now that's a character arc *g* Yeah, that may be too far :)

Sin said...

Wow, Melissa. That's one helluva story arc for one book. Very interesting though. I've always been a fan of the non-traditional story.

terrio said...

I read that as missionary position thought that wasn't much of a stretch for a prostitute.

Nevermind.

Sin said...

Honestly, the first time I read that I thought of the missionary position as well. I guess we know where our minds are. LOL

Melissa said...

Pirates. What to do with you! [throws hands up in the air] LOL

terrio said...

You have to be very careful around here, Melissa. LOL! He found her at a MISSION.

Melissa said...

Yeah, I left the door open for that one. lol

hal said...

missionary position. *snort* Am I the only one left with a clean mind around here? I would have never gone there. *hal sticks nose up in air and starts whistling innocently*

No problem on the email. As you can see, I'm much less swamped then I was a few months back, but I know the feeling. :)

That and have those days you just want to be taken out back and banged really hard against the brick wall. *whistling innocently*

terrio said...

*snort*

I totally relate to these.

2nd Chance said...

I'm gonna work a blog 'bout how I am all my characters...but I'll save that for later...

I b'lieve the diff'rence between alpah males and alpha females aint' the denial of emotion, but the handlin' of it in decision makin'. An alpha male will look at emotional repurcussions as a secondary casualty. A female alpha is more likely to look at emotional repurcussions as a primary casualty or in equal measure to the rest.

When you have an alpha female who denies her emotions, that becomes part of her reaction. You see how it plays into actions she takes. An alpha male who denies his emotions really shuts them off. The female has an emotion rise and says "Later." The male has an emotion rise and says "Never."

Female - This is important, I'll think about it later, right now I have to ...

Male - Stupid emotion gets in the way. Go away, I have something I need to do...

Sounds ta me like I need ta lock up the bar fer a while...or open it up completely and declare taday the first Friday a' the week...

Yeah, school starts on Monday, so this is one of those nightmare weeks for me. Grrrrr.

Can brick look comfy?!

Sin said...

Depends who's leaning against it, Ter. LOL

hal said...

tantalizing. that's a better word.

hal said...

Comfy was the wrong word. It looks.......inviting. I mean, if I'm going to be banged up against something....*more innocent whistling*

Sin said...

I love that word- tantalizing. It sounds so naughty.

Sin said...

MM, I like that today is the first Friday of the week! More rum for everyone!

Sin said...

MM, I'm so glad you're around to actually put my thoughts into words. ITA on your clarifications.

Melissa said...

2nd Chance (btw, can I just say Chance, or is there also a Last Chance?) - I can't wait for your blog on being all your characters. Your first comment today was exactly my first thought, but then I lost it reading the comments on alphas.

On the differences between male and female alphas, I agree, but I think it can be switched around, especially with a "save the world" heroine. My heroine in THE DUKE'S ANGEL, had the male: Stupid emotion gets in the way. Go away, I have something I need to do…

She needed to save the world. But then she forgot. lol

terrio said...

There's a lot of whistling going on around here today.

Melissa said...

MM? Sorry, who is MM? 2nd Chance? I'm sooo confused. lol

2nd Chance said...

Cool. I thought I blathered a bit.

Brick walls...well...make sure ya ain't wearin' somethin' that will snag. Provide yerself some back protection... Bricks are rough!

See? I look at a nice slope a' grass and think nasty thoughts... But I be practical romantic. A ship's rail might scare Hellie, thinkin' her beau would drop her in the midst a' passion. I think a' how the height would be nice, the sun, the spray at me back...

I think I'm more romantic than the Cap'n?!

terrio said...

2nd Chance = MM = Mad Maureen
Last Chance = MM's sister
Mama Chance = self-explanatory.

LOL!

2nd Chance said...

She needed to save the world. But then she forgot.

Melissa! That be a great hook! And ya can jus' say Chance. Me sis, Last Chance, be a permanent lurker and never climbs aboard.

I gots me a heroine who ...yeah, yeah, I know. Heroine isn't in vogue, but I do have two and they aren't the same sex...so shoot me.... Anyway, me heroine works extra hard ta forget she has emotions. Denial! Denial! Denial! Ivy lives on that emotional river, in fact, she's drowing in it.

I love writing her flailing around...

Sin said...

Just imagine if there was Q on the ship today. Think of all the whistling that would get done then because he's a gentleman and I can't be carrying on like that while he's around.

Sin said...

MM, is Chance. MM is her initials as Mad Maureen. LOL

2nd Chance said...

And me hero is sailin' the ship on the river denial that is goin' ta haul her out and teach her how ta use her emotions as the current that carries her... Wow, I'm goin' a bit far with that analogy...

Damn, I gots ta finish that WIP!

Hellie said...

Oh, I know what I was going to say from earlier! I think it's funny when alpha females sound "masculine."

Elizabeth is definitely alpha, and boy, does she sound like a boy at times. "I will not sleep with a Stage Fiver." I think she's a hoot.

And you guys are cracking me up with walls and all sorts of banging. This does feel like a Friday. *LOL*

terrio said...

Elizabeth sized up men the way I think men size up women. As if she can see them without their clothes on. LOL!

Hellie said...

Yeah, I like that about her too. *LOL*

I used to be able to look at a guy and tell you what size he'd wear in a levi's jeans. I'm horribly out of practice.

hal said...

Levi's. Mmmm.

I gotta say, the Levi jeans are one of the few things I miss about Missouri. The homeboy baggy jeans just aren't the same *g*

Most of the guys I date (marry) shop in the Big & Tall stores. LOL!

And I will NEVER understand the "wear your waistband around your knees" thing. Then again, my little brother went through that phase where he wore chick jeans. Those really skinny ones. That's not really a better alternative.

hal said...

nicely done Ter. Way to whip us pirates into shape *g*

There's nothing like an Alpha in a pair of Levis.

There.

terrio said...

Don't bring up whips, we'll get off topic again.

hal said...

which would you prefer? An alpha with a whip, or a beta with handcuffs?

See, I'm still on topic :)

Hellie said...

Is there a both option? Can the alpha borrow the handcuffs?

I'll skip the handcuffs. Chafing, you know. Now, a nice soft scarf I wouldn't mind.

Anyone see 40 Days and 40 Nights? Remember what he did with that flower? I'll skip the whip and go for something like that.

Sin writing a beta male...no way! *g*

Babe, it was inevitable, and you explained it beautifully. An alph girl has a beta male to balance her, and soften the rough edges.

When I think of alpha females I always think of JR Ward's Xhex, and JM. Although, I think JM is coming out of his shell, the roles may reverse before the book is over and done...*can't wait*

No worries, I write myself in some of my characters. That's why I think I write a terrible Stephanie Plum. I make her way too alpha. I'm alpha myself, but I hide so many vulnerabilities. My heroines are usually the same.

Great blog:)

hal said...

god, that was a hot scene.

I have to get my head back on plagiarism policies. Which frankly, is way less fun than handcuffs, silk scarves and flower petals

terrio said...

Nice. Lisa goes all serious and makes me look like a complete twit. LOL!

Thanks.

I like the idea of the roles reversing. I think in most successful real world relationships (not that I've had any) that the roles change all the time. I'm very independent and a bit of an alpha, but sometimes it would be nice not to have to be the person in charge all the time.

It makes sense that an alpha character would find some relief in knowing someone else is carrying the ball for a while.

Sin said...

I'll take all of the above with my alpha male... thank you.

Melissa said...

Terri says, It makes sense that an alpha character would find some relief in knowing someone else is carrying the ball for a while.

I think it would drive him or her crazy. At least in the beginning, because the alpha needs to be in control. I'm thinking of all those times I've read a hero that is injured and busts his stitches because he can't let someone else help. I guess that's when the heroine needs to bring out the handcuffs and silk scarves. :)

terrio said...

Oh, that reminds me of when Booth left the hospital when he figured out that Fed dude was dirty and had Bones and then he saved her. With broken ribs and all. *sigh*

I was thinking more like at the end of the story, once the alpha has come to trust the other and knows he can depend on her. Or vice versa. Yeah, in the beginning, that is so not happening. I'm with ya.

Sabrina said...

terrio - I was a late comer to Bones - now I'm addicted! BUT, I'm having a hard time when a show comes on knowing where it fits in the timeline.

I need to get the DVD's to watch from beginning to now. Drives me crazy to jump bakwards in time with the reruns I'm watching.

Back on point, I do think the h/h jockeying for position in the relationship adds great conflict. Booth and Bones are masters (alphas) of different parts of their lives and worlds. Bones is constantly trying to learn how Booth does things because she can't admit that she couldn't be better at it if she just learned how.

I like the aspect of having two alphas that rule in different parts of their lives. It's hte give and take of the alpha role I find interesting.

terrio said...

I came to the show late too, but caught up by watching reruns on TNT. Now, I can't find a single episode I haven't seen. But it is odd to bounce back to the first season when they were getting to know each other. And before Angela and Hodgins got all hot. (BTW, am I the only one who thinks Hodgins is hot?)

You're right about Bones refusing to admit Booth is better than she is at anything. LOL! She calls him stupid all the time, which kills me. Or at least she used to. Who do you think that psychologist dude thinks is the one in love with the other? (Obviously, they both are, but that's sort of the mystery of last season.)

terrio said...

Hey, you made me the 99th comment! LOL! Do I get a prize for that?

I think he means Booth. Bones is too blockheaded to realize it.

Sin said...

I know. LOL

terrio said...

It's kind of ironic that we have almost 99 comments on the blog titled 99 Bottles of rum. :)

Sin said...

Bones.

I don't watch the show (once in a blue moon I will catch it on) but I think the psychologist dude thinks its Bones.

Just a hunch. *shrug*

Sin said...

I dunno. I'll have to see what I can get you. Maybe a sparkly dildo.

terrio said...

If I had one I'd have the other, huh?

hal said...

how about a glittery hooha?

Sabrina said...

ok soda just came out the nose...Dr. Pepper smells weird that way...and it tingles!

Sin said...

I'm glad I'm not the only one around here that has nasal issues. LOL

Sin said...

And Ter, I wouldn't be looking to find out. LOL

terrio said...

Sorry, Sabrina! LOL!

Sin - It just seems like a logical conclusion is all.

Sin said...

I think I once read something about a glittery hooha by way of accidental glittering before a DR appointment. Is that how we got glittery hooha drinks around here? Or am I dreaming?

terrio said...

We swiped the term Glittery Hooha from Jenny Crusie. But how do you accidentally glitter your hooha? LOL!

"Well, doctor, I was sprinkling glitter on my shower massager and....

hal said...

LOL! It was a story about a woman how inadvertently used her 16yr old daughter's glittery shower gel while showering before going to the gynecologist. She didn't realize she'd used the glitter until the doctor said, "Oh, Pretty." LMAO!!

terrio said...

There are worse things your gynecologist could say at that moment.

Sin said...

How could you want to be a gynecologist when you grow up? Seriously. The stuff they have to see... *shudder*

Sin said...

LMFAO. Hal! You came to my rescue! You're my alpha today. *laughing*

hal said...

ah, I'm alpha for the day :)

I often wonder that, especially about men. Why would you choose that as a career?

terrio said...

I'd hate to be married to a gynecologist. Talk about hooha-esteem issues. How could you possibly retain your glitteryness when he sees them ALL DAY LONG?!

Sin said...

Get it pierced?

Sabrina said...

ooohhh - new business venture - stick ons for hoohas!

Like playing doll dress up!

Cracking myself up.

terrio said...

I just shifted in my chair. *shivers*

Speaking of Alpha females, I'm listening to Miranda Lambert and this song reminds me of this blog. LOL!

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
I watched her for awhile but
I didn't like her walk
She came across kinda cheap to me but
how's that my fault
She looked at my man like he didn't have on a stitch
Somebody tell that girl to step up to the plate I'm gonna pitch
(Little bitch)
Those pretty girls can play their game
But they're damn well gonna know my name
I'm a crazy ex-girlfriend

Sin said...

LMFAO

Now we're getting costumes for the glittering hoohas?

Sabrina said...

Like would you need to dress it up and make it look different all the time?

terrio said...

I don't know about yours, Sabrina, but mine is always wearing a sweater.

;)

terrio said...

Stick ons implies glue. No glue in that area, thank you.

Sabrina said...

duh - envision

Sabrina said...

LOL - I was invisoning that window cling technology. You know - easily removable, non-sticky

Sin said...

You can even shape the sweater into different ones. *laughing*

Sin said...

LMFAO- I can't believe you said that Ter. "Mine is always wearing a sweater."

Like playing with paper dolls- all those outfits to put on and mix and match.

terrio said...

Yeah, that was probably TMI, but this far down in the comments, no one but us pirates and our regulars are following along. LOL! And y'all aren't shockable anymore.

2nd Chance said...

OK, I go away for a few hours ta shop and the whole place goes mad.

MAD!

And I missed most of it. Shit.

They do have removable jewelry fer the hoohas, crew. It sorta...well, hooks onta... E-mail if ya really wants ta know. ;) Personally...no never mind, ya all don't need ta know that much 'bout me.

(Man I would kill to see Q drop in right now...)

I think Booth knows he loves Bones...Booth is more in touch with his emotions.

Sin said...

I know what you're talking about MM. *g*

Sin said...

I agree with Booth knowing he loves Bones. The little of the show I've watched, you just know that he has feelings for her that go deeper than just friends.

Sabrina said...

Booth totally knows and accepts he loves Bones...now he's just waiting for her to realize she loves him back and that love doesn't have to be logical.

2nd Chance said...

Do you think Booth fears she'll reject him? Make light a' his feeling? Or even scarier, admit she feels the same?

Ya look at the dynamic between Fiona and Michael on Burn Notice...he knows, she knows. He knows she wants more, she knows he just can't give... Talk about two alphas dancin' wit' each other! But maybe things gonna change next season...

The scene where Booth rescues Tempe from that rouge agent was awesome. Like when he pulled her from the gravedigger... And when Michael shot that bastard that set Fiona up. Made me cheer!

Those be dynamic couples!

terrio said...

But this would be a terrible turn for this show. If they put them together, the show is over forever, you know that. Remington Steele, Moonlighting, Scarecrow & Mrs. King (could be reaching with this one).

Why do you think Miss Kitty never got together with Marshall Dillon?! The show would have been over. LOL!

2nd Chance said...

If'n we be lucky, they'll wait for the 'get together' when the show has run it's course. And yes, Terrio, I think Hodgins is hot. And I liked him wit' ...damn...what's her name? Angela! Yeah, Angela.

And I love the constant parade a' lab assistants...especially the meloncholy goth guy.

Sin said...

I love those sort of couples. They are the reason I love to write fiction.

terrio said...

Remember the Bones where they faked Booth's death and Tempe didn't know? When she found out, she decked him. LOL! Too funny.

Chance - I purposely did not watch Burn Notice because I knew it was going to be good and I didn't want to be sucked in. And that man (what is his name?!) is so damn hot. I mean, steam coming off my television when he's just standing still doing nothing.

Hellie said...

OMG, the sweater comment is iconic. That one should be framed and put somewhere on the ship.

No idea how gynocologists decide to go into the profession. Though I don't know there is a preferred body part to specialize in, if you think about it. They're all messy.

Cannot contribute to the Bones discussion. Never watched; and I don't care that I've never watched it. *LOL*

2nd Chance said...

BN is easy, Terrio! It be a summer show so it doesn't run real long. I have the first season on DVD...want me ta send it ta ya?

*whisperin' temptingly

I will be buyin' this one season by season...I like it that much. And love the character a' Sam... I think he's hot.

Stop laughing! Bruce Campbell rocks!

But yeah, the guy playing Michael is good. We should get 'im on the ship. And Bruce. I'll even mix up a special mojito fer Bruce...

2nd Chance said...

Ya see the new commercial fer that electric razor special fer the...ahem...glitter zone? I swear, it be so subtle it took me watchin' it a few times afore I realized why the bushes were changin' shape...

OH!

terrio said...

You have your HP, you don't need Bones. :)

I made an iconic comment? Ha!

Chance - I think I know who I can line up for a hottie this weekend. ;)

2nd Chance said...

Crew, next time we be in a hotel tagether, let's tie Hellie ta a chair and force 'er ta watch "Bones".

I've even read the books the series be based on...loosely based I might add.

terrio said...

Chance - Have you ever tried to shave a cat? That's what it would be like trying to tie up Hellie. Just warning ya.

I like when they make references to the fictional name Tempe writes under, which is the real chicks' name. LOL!

2nd Chance said...

You know, Jane-o's son actually did shave her Mama Cat when he was staying at their house... Bears the scars to prove it... Offered to shave her new Pomeranian puppy for her. I think he is a frustrated barbar...

We jus' get Hellie drunk first...

terrio said...

That plan has more merit, but I'll still take the role of innocent observer.

2nd Chance said...

Chicken.

Headin' back ta Mom watch. I warned Last Chance that if'n she reads this entire blog, ta keep her shamwow handy...

*G

Great blog, Sin. Hope yer proud a' yerself!

Hellie said...

2nd: you're just making me that much more likely to never allow myself to be located in the same room with you. If you keep threatening me with group hugs, granola crunchie philosophy (and one of my best friends is a granola crunchie and I can only handle it in small doses), and TV shows I have no need for (we should be WRITING, people)--I will be the 2nd Pirate Ninja on this ship.

And no one is tying me to a chair and shaving a cat. Just so we're clear.

terrio said...

LMFAO!!!

Sin said...

There will be NO second Ninja Pirating on this ship.

*crossing arms over chest* I have stars and I'm not afraid to use them.

terrio said...

I love that Sin is more worried about someone moving in on her ninja territory than someone shaving her cat.

Sin said...

*g* You don't really want me to answer that, do you?

terrio said...

Somehow, I know exactly what your answer would be. And then we'd both be sharing TMI. LMAO!!

2nd Chance said...

I did not say that her son shaved 'her' cat... Ahem. He shaved her feline animal companion...named Mama Cat...

I pray to God Jane-o never reads this blog...

Hel - They'll be a day...a room...and a bottle of rum. No shaver, that I promise. I DO write. I also watch tv. You Amish bitch, you!
