When in Rome...

I'm not a fan of TV series'. In fact, I don't sit down for a lot of TV at all. Three years ago a commercial flashed across the screen. Very vivid imagery- especially with the blood red running like a river down the cobblestone road and the white roman garb dragging along the street, draped over luscious, barely covered bodies. It was sexy. It was bold. It caught my attention. Immediately, I knew I wanted to see what it was all about.Of course. It was on cable. Drat.

For anyone who doesn't know, I like living under a rock.

So I forgot all about this show. Out of sight, out of this mind. Until for AP day in April, two years ago, someone gifted me the entire first season on DVD. I skipped home like a giddy school girl in anticipation of what I might see. Mattycakes and I plugged it into the DVD player late one night, both apprehensive, figuring it was going to suck. Neither one of us had heard a peep about the first season. No one really knew what we were talking about. So I guess I was the only one in the world jonsing to see this.
I have to tell you that TV has really changed. Even in the last decade.
Rome was very hardcore. I found myself drawn into the violence, waiting for it with baited breath, cheering for more. The plotting, the scheming, and the back stabbing (although, not literally. At least not in the first season.)- it was like reading a very graphic erotica with some mystery and supsense thrown in. Much better than any wussy soap opera could ever hope to be. It's based so loosely off history that I found it entertaining without being trite and ridiculous for the time period. Honestly, after I finished the first season, I was ready to lop off to the desktop and write myself a historical Roman erotica.
Mattycakes and I have been gifted with the second season. I'm nearly dancing out of my seat to watch it. We just finished it all on Sunday and all I have to say is.. um, wow. If only I could write like that!
When it comes to reading or watching, it's all a difference of the visual. Reading allows your imagination to play upon the written word and draw up the imagery. It allows you to see the novel like you're watching it, but with what you want to see. But TV takes all that away from you. Yeah, TV/movies can create totally visually stunning imagery, but it's how they perceive it. Not you. Where's the fun in that? I don't prefer to watch my sex, violence and mayhem- I prefer to read it and give it a good visual spin in my mind.
How about you? You prefer the rainbows, puppies and kittens side of fiction or do you enjoy the more hardcore, open your eyes in a new light, side? Do you prefer to read or watch fiction? And do you ever watch TV/Movie adaptations of your favorite book?

I'm a reader more than a watcher and I love it hardcore in your face. That's one thing I love about writing during medieval and Gregorian, it's not full of fluff and flounce, not always. I can get by with a bloody battle or a beheading, I can get by with trying to paint a picture of reality. I don't have to write a complete rose colored glasses type of a story.

I don't watch much TV much either, but now you have me curious. I'll have to check it out.

I LOVED Rome!

So It's
Harcore for me... the harder the beeeeeehhhhh.... Umm... well if I was being Conservative ... ahhh... the way certain people like me to be then I'd have to say rainbows, puppies and kittens... HARDCORE rainbows, puppies and kittens! LOL!

R, P & K here, sorry. Big on eye-averting and just can't watch scary/bloody/cruel things. Since I've started writing seriously, I've pretty much cut TV out of the picture anyway, so my eyes are safe.

It was their bold ads that had me hooked to. I had to watch it, I did watch it... episode four, season one, is my fav episode. I love this series, and it's not often something so brilliant is put together!

It's unfortunate the other part in my house watches way too much TV... I avoid it. But I did watch that, and I did watch Carnivale (holy mother of God was that something) when it was on... also HBO

I love hardcore. Sex, violence, mayhem... bust mostly the sex! LOL

I can say both to all of your questions. I liked Rome, too! Though I never got to sit down and watch an entire season. I'm defininitely thinking about it now though.

Julie, LOL! Hardcore rainbows puppies and kittens. LOL!!

I can read hardcore stuff much easier than watching it. I actually can't watch scary movies, but I can watch blood and gore. Who knew? Monsters though, and horror movies, not so much.

I'm loving the paranormal stuff right now. But I like things to be sarcastic and funny. So, a mix? Who knows....

PS, our layouts jacked up again.... Who volunteered themselves? I felt like it was Jordan, but Jordan's on the West Coast and she's got a newborn so she might be tied up.

Oh, good, the site doesn't just jack up when I post stuff. That's reassuring.

I loved Rome, the episodes I've seen of it. Okay, it was the blatant sex, mostly, where I was going, "HOW are they doing that? That looks too real...ish..." And I totally loved that soldier guy--the blond--who's wife cheated on him. Who was that guy?

I love when the site gets all jacked up. It's like it drinks a gallon of Mountain Dew and shakes itself up and pops the top off.

Renee, I can see why you like to write during that time period. I'm all about books written for that genre. It's real. It's hardcore. It's in your face. I really think you'd love Rome just for those reasons. It doesn't always stay true to history, but it's definitely eye opening.

Jules! Hardcore rainbows, puppies and kittens! I love how you think! Are these puppies going to wear gold teeth and rap too? LOL

Maggie, I normally don't like to watch blood. Or bones sticking out from under the skin all exposed like, but there was something about this show that drew me in.

I'm trying to cut out all the TV. So You Think You Can Dance is my weakness. Tonight is the last show then I can go back to ignoring the TV.

Tiff, weren't they just some fantastic ads? The imagery is stunning, not to mention all the sets and costumes are perfect. Titus Pullo is my favorite character. I love him. He's so 'bout it.

Sin said...

Not to mention I love the hardcore sex too.

I heard Carnivale was outrageously good. My BFF watched it and kept trying to get me too as well. But we've never had cable.

Sin said...

Kelly, they are super expensive. We would've never watched them if we had to buy them (not only do we live under rocks, but we're cheap too, LOL). We received both of them as gifts. I wonder if you can rent them? Ooh, do you think the library has them?

Lucius Verinus, Hellion. Isn't he hot?

Sin said...

Marn, I love paranormal all the time. Especially weird paranormal. I like things that make me think and plot in my head. Hellion likes her paranormal to be funny and sarcastic too. I mean, she reads Sherrilyn Kenyon.

Hellion said...

WAY HOT. He was so grumpy--that man totally needed a cheering charm. (Yep, the Harry Potter references begin. November 21st, people!!!) And I don't know why I liked him because grumpy men aren't usually my thing. I'm usually the grumpy one; I want happy, fun ones to balance me out. But this was ROME...and I don't remember seeing any happy, fun guys. James Purefoy was about the "happiest" one of the bunch...and he was a bit, well, not quite what I have in mind. *LOL*

*checks her order on Amazon and screams* My new Dark-Hunter book is coming today! I'll have something to read at lunch!

Loved James Purefoy as Antony. He was great. Not to mention he played a pompous ass like nobody's business. He's just a great actor. Not to mention, hot.

Sin said...

This is the Ash one isn't it? I got to hear all the screams from Stef yesterday.

Hellion said...

Yes, the Ash one. *hopping up and down*

I haven't heard of Rome! What network is it on...and HBO channel or something? Sounds too hardcore to be on regular cable. lol. I can completely handle blood and guts on tv but it bores me to read about it because I don't sit there picturing those scenes in my head. I only picture the nice scenes!

I need to start turning off the tv so I can write earlier in the evening. Last year I had 2 months of no tv. It was horrible and wonderful all at the same time! :)

Hellion said...

*locates box in mailroom, opens box* HOLY CRAP. I didn't realize the book was 720 pages. I think it's the same length as the last Harry Potter book!

Sin said...

Stephanie, it was on HBO. I hear it didn't get renewed for a third season. I guess I should look. I'm used to all the shows I wanted to watch (ie. Moonlight, Blood Ties) getting the boot. Can't imagine why they wouldn't do another season of Rome. It's fantastic.

You can't picture the blood and guts, and blood dripping from wounds, and a man's hand wrapped around someone's throat? Girlfriend, we've gotta work on you.

Tiffany said...

James Purefoy... he's in close running with Gerry Butler, in my books... 'sides, the man is hung like a horse... remember episode four season one.. teehee...

Sin said...

Um... uh, yes. I do love that episode. There are more episodes in Season 2 that I love. Hot damn he's one fine stalion.

Tiffany said...

I missed a lot of the second season. :( I'm waiting for someone to gift it to me :)

Please tell me the ship is tilted and this is not just my vertigo. LOL! Sorry so late, I got tired of the world spinning so ditched work and stayed in bed. Didn't totally work. Must schedule nap for afternoon.

I've seen most of this series. I thought there was a third and final season, but we know my memory isn't the best. Talk about plot twists, this show had it all.

I'm not one for hardcore. I can take it occassionally, but I think I'd rather read it than watch it. Like Steph, I can manage NOT to picture things clearly while reading. I've read some things that have made me cringe but managed to keep going.

That dude who played Lucius got his own show on some other network where he jumped around in time I think. But I'm not sure if it'll be on again this fall.

This is what happens when we all drink too much rum and not enough V8 juice.

I watched that show. It was hard to follow :(

If you would have asked me a couple of months ago I would have said puppies and kittens, definitely! Then we were given ROME! OMG! I think we watched the first hour of it with our mouths hanging open, muttering I can't believe they're showing this!

The DH and I received it as a gift from his brother. We sat down one night cause we were kidless and decided to watch the 1st episode to see if we liked it... 5 hours later we were still watching it, checking our watches as it creeped near 2 am (later than we've stayed up in years!) We kept saying - one more episode. Then after we stopped watching that first night we were like crack addicts. He'd come home from work, we'd eat and shoo the kids upstairs telling them it was an adult show and not to come down. Hilarious. We gave it to his Dad who watched Season 1 in one straight shot one Saturday!

Now we're on the lookout for something as good. I was going to try The Tudors but heard mixed reviews on it. Then I thought Deadwood.

My favorite character was Titus Pullo. He was great. I really liked his relationship with Lucius. And it was only on for 2 seasons. It didn't get picked up for a third. I heard some of the sets in London burned down or something and halted production.

Sin said...

Irish- I really really like the Tudors. It's not as bloody as Rome, but it's a little more decadent. I watched the whole first season in a day because I couldn't turn it off. I heard Deadwood was most excellent though I've not seen it.

I can attest to the not being able to go to bed. We kept saying, "Just one more episode and we'll go to bed" and it was a work night. It's hard to shut off. The second season is even better. And I'm really upset about them not doing another season. That's just too bad.
