While the Bo'sun's Away....

You know how if you're in a writing group, you share snippets of your WIP, the best of the best of your stuff, in little boosts of encouragement to keep you running to the finish line? Right. So the Pirates do that; and I had availed myself to what I thought was the best of the best of the Bo'sun's debut book. Joe was a delightful cranky pants; Beth was...finding herself. Sid was fantastic, stealing every scene she was in. I mean, I knew the book was good. It finaled. It was bought. The whole nine yards.

But I bought my "hard" copy--because I refuse to read digital--and had packed it with three other "must-have" romances for the summer. Because one of the books didn't come out until late June, I had to wait until early July before I got my books. (I'm very Scottish about the free shipping.) I then proceeded to read the other books first because, well, I had read this one. In snippets. I already knew what I had.

It was sorta like seeing thirty different movie trailers for Pirates of the Caribbean. Seriously, how much more to the story could there be?

After exhausting the other books from the box, I was sitting this weekend, going, "Hmm, you know I could go ahead and read Terri's book. It won't take long because--" You know. I'd read it before. Well, I did finish it in about a day--staying up to 2 a.m. on Sunday morning to finish the very last page. I sighed at the how the black moment played out; I wondered how it would come around; I was thrilled with the happily ever after. There is MORE to this story than any snippet Terri has shared--and I know she's shared a few to tease readers into buying.

It's the sort of book that you can imagine how it would play out on a movie screen. Only I won't get into that because I'm certain Terri and I didn't agree on what Joe looks like, and I like "my version" best. Best part of books. You can imagine everyone however you want.

So if you're not going to the conference this week and you don't know what book on your TBR pile to read next--and you're foolish like me and haven't read this one yet (despite all the snippets you've read), go get it. It should take about one or two days max of the conference before you need to start looking for something else to occupy your time again. I hear Candy Crush is pretty distracting. But read MEANT TO BE first.

What are you reading this week?

I'm revising. No reading. Well, when I get a chance I've been reading Feeding the Hungry Heart by Geneen Roth. All about emotional eating.

Yeah, still.

But Terri's book! Read the beta version, still need to read the final. Read the beta of Sid's book, you're gonna love it!

Aw, this is so sweet. (And yes, I'm up at 5:40am. Don't ask.

You can picture Joe however you want! In fact, it might be fun to hear how others see him. I'm reading Nancy Northcott's Guardian and she recently posted a pic of an actor she can see playing him. Totally not what I see. So go for it!

Back to last minute packing.

Mo, you're on a self-help book kick, aren't you? Of course, I get on those kicks too, so I shouldn't be surprised, but I always need a fiction book to cleanse the palate.

Terri, I don't have to ask why you're up at 5:40 am. I'd be more surprised if you slept prior to getting up. So the madness begins! And I thought you were already packed???

I loved Meant to Be. And I think I liked Up to the Challenge even more, because I adore Sid and the man who was dumb enough not to notice her all those years.
I definitely think there's no substitute for reading a story straight through.

Have fun on your trip, Ter!!

Read MEANT TO BE and loved it! I really like the community Terri created. I'm seriously addicted to all of these small town series popping up. So glad that seems to be the trend these days.

Wow, what am I reading. I'm all over the place this week. I read your review on Lorraine Heath's LORD OF WICKED INTENTIONS, Hellie, and since it sounded right up my alley I ran right out and got it. For some reason I missed Tristan's story when it came out so I'm on the lookout for that one too. I read LOWI and really liked it. Thanks for the heads up.

The past 2 days I've been reading novellas. Read Ruthie Knox's MAKING IT LAST yesterday and really, really liked it. It was different cause it was a 15 years after the HEA follow-up to her novella last year HOW TO MISBEHAVE, which I loved! It amazes me how all of these authors are telling such riveting stories with so few words.

Speaking of which I'm on #3 of Lily Everett's The Billionaire Brothers novella trilogy to introduce her Sanctuary Island series. And I'm waiting for Virginia Kantra's CAROLINA GIRL to be delivered today. Looked all over for it and finally broke down and ordered it from Amazon. Since I'm an Amazon Prime member I get free 2-day shipping. I get nuts about the shipping too, Hellie! For some reason it really bothers me to pay that extra $2+ for shipping. LOL

Oh, and all my best wishes for an awesome conference, Ter! Have a blast and don't forget your hand exercises so you don't get writer's cramp from signing all of those books! :)

I read Meant to Be in a beta version, as an ARC, and as an ebook and enjoyed it each time. I haven't read Up to the Challenge, but I told Terri when I first read MTB that I hoped she was writing Sid's story. She is such a great character.

I'm writing about beauty pageants today and hoping I have reading time tonight so that I can start Molly O'Keefe's Wild Child. Irish, I love Carolina Girl and now I am most impatiently waiting for Carolina Man. I was already eager to read Luke's story, and when I read the chapter at the end of Carolina Girl, that eagerness intensified.

Meant to Be is in my TBR pile (virtual, Kindle), but I'm waiting till my brain chemistry is in a more contemporary mode.

Currently reading Hearts of Shadow by Kira Brady. I wasn't very fond of the hero/heroine in this book's predecessor, but did something out-of-character and bought the second book because the couple in this one really intrigued me. So far, so good.

Was clipping along at a good pace with Now You See Her (Linda Howard). Then I got to reading and finished Cold Magic (Kate Elliot), which I thought was awesome. Consequently, Now You See Her seems sort of flat by comparison. Skimmed the first sex scene.

Will be switching gears at the end of the week when Journey Into Mystery: Fear Itself (comic/graphic novel) arrives in the mail because...Loki.

Marn, I imagine I'll like Up to the Challenge even more. Just because Sid is a riot. Sid personifies that meme on FB where, "Of course, I'm a fucking lady!" makes me snort soda out of my nose.

Irish, the community is awesome on this island. I was ready to settle in for more stories on Anchor. :) But I imagine Terri will create community wherever she writes. :)

Janga, I think we're all in consensus about Sid! *LOL* Lots of love!

Pat, I might have to look into COLD MAGIC, just because I'm intrigued by the title. Linda Howard writes romantic suspense right? Or thrillers? (I haven't read her in a long time but know she's good. I'm not just not into murder-"romances" on the whole; they're not escapist enough for me. You know, because in my real life I'm surrounded by murder and misery. Oh, wait, sorry, I was thinking about that episode of SVU. My mix up.

I love that there is so many things available to readers now. We don't all have to like Charles Dickens to read a good story.

Loki. I do like me some Loki.

I picked Cold Magic up thinking it was YA, but it's more like a NA steampunk/fantasy since the female protagonists are nineteen/twenty. (Story takes place right around their twentieth birthdays.) I think (hope) that the romantic subplot has a kind of HEA, but that's two books away, since this is a trilogy.

The Howard book is an oldie that I picked up on sale for like $1.99.

The Loki series is well-reviewed and is all about a reincarnated, teenage (Marvel-verse) Loki. So...must have for this geek.

I loved Meant to Be! Fortunately, I read it the day it came out on my Kindle. I wanted to visit Anchor Island and thought Joe and Beth were meant for each other. I am looking forward to Sid's book, too.

I say fortunately because thanks to last week's post, I read Lord of Wicked Intentions instead of doing the work that I am supposed to be doing!! (I think I have been on call a little too much so I'll say I justifiably needed a break--the work will always be there--grin.)

Now I am procrastinating on my own with Courtney Milan's The Heiress Effect. According to my youngest, I was laughing hysterically. It was enough laughing to lift my mood. Of course, I have reached the more moving part of the book. Love, love, love the heroine. Thoroughly enjoy how Courtney writes relationships between siblings and the H/H.

Have no idea how to italicize or underline. You'll have to excuse that the titles are not identified.

So happy for Terri and looking forward to her next novel.
