It's the Super Blog! The Morning After

So, it’s my day to blog. And, of course, I waited until Sunday evening to come up with something. Lucky for me, this isn’t just any Sunday. I’ve been a football fan since childhood, as you can’t have grown up outside Pittsburgh in the 70s and NOT be a football fan. Which means, I can live blog the game.

Or the commercials. Whatever floats my boat. About to have kick off. Let’s see how this goes.

Well, that wasn’t very exciting. This will be especially nice for those of you who didn’t watch the game. This will be like the Reader’s Digest condensed version. (DISCLAIMER: I do not work for Reader’s Digest nor am I implying they approve of this blog.)

There have been some fun commercials already. Interesting version of the National Anthem too. I don’t think there will be any lip-syncing controversy there. Speaking of, whose looking forward to Beyonce at half time? I admit, I’m just happy they’re featuring an artist who has had a hit song in this century.

And we have a touchdown. Ravens up by 7. That Go Daddy commercial is SO WRONG. I couldn’t even watch. And I just realized the best commercials are the ones that tell a story. So far, the Audi prom commercial is going to be  tough to beat. Some writers lament having to tell a story with ten or twenty thousand words. Try telling a complete story that not only gets people to pay attention but moves them by the end, all in sixty seconds.

The Oreo commercial isn’t doing it for me. Too over-the-top.

Another Fast & Furious? Really? Sigh. Hello! Calvin Klein. You’ll want to look that one up. And now I’m starting to wonder if some key 49ers aren’t being held hostage in the locker room. WTH, people?! Not enjoying this first half.

Old people partying it up and Fun. singing in Spanish. That one might be a win. This first half is getting so bad, I just yelled, “Was he waiting for the dude to play patty cake?! HIT HIM!!” I need some chocolate.

Okay, time for Beyonce. *sings* ALL THE SINGLE LADIES.... And it’s a Destiny’s Child reunion! Cool! *show ends* That was awesome!

Now, to see if (Jim) Harbaugh was able to talk some sense into his players. (Okay, that 2 Broke Girls promo was cool. *sings* POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME...)

Well, I didn’t see that coming. Power outage during the Super Bowl. Thank goodness I had snarky tweets to drown out the mind-numbing crap spewing from the commentators. Half hour later, we’re back to the action.
And there’s already a Twitter handle for the Super Bowl lights. The internetz so crazy. Finally! San Fran is making a comeback. This begs the question, what author no longer writing would you like to see make a comeback?

Now it’s a 2 point game and the commercials are getting better. Paul Harvey. Montanaland. Babies from space. That’s probably the only time I’ve ever not minded the Wheels On The Bus song.

And the game is over. THAT was painful. In case I didn’t mention it before, I was pulling for the 49ers. Sooooo close. Sucks that it had to come down to the refs not making an obvious call.

So what have we learned tonight? Luck is just as important in football as it is in writing. (The bad calls = constant rejections.) There will always be critics who bitch no matter what you do. (Beyonce haters = unhappy reviewers.) And goats like Doritos. (I’ve got nothing here.)

Did you watch the game? Did your team win? Favorite commercial? How many books will we see by the end of the year with aliens invading during a blackout at the Super Bowl?

My team lost before the Superbowl, and so I boycotted the game. I wrote reviews instead, although I did watch the commercials online. The Audi Prom ad and the Budweiser Clydesdale ad were the winners IMO. The Audi ad left me smiling, but the Clydesdale left me smiling with a tear in my eye. It gets my first place vote.

That Clydesdales commercial seems to be carrying the day, Janga. The Samsung one with Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd was funny too. And I don't particularly like Seth Rogan.

The commentators were truly dreadful. And I turned it off as soon as the game ended. Not interested in the Ray Lewis show that was certain to follow. Cannot stand that man. Bah!

What a silly question--of course, I didn't watch the game, but I'm guessing this question really wasn't for me. I *DID* enjoy the recap though--it felt "live" even though I was reading the morning after and laughed quite a bit.

Although the: " I admit, I’m just happy they’re featuring an artist who has had a hit song in this century."--OUCH! I'm pretty sure Madonna has had a hit within this century. Maybe not the decade, but the century (from 2000 on.) And don't be hating on Springsteen. The Rolling Stones? I'll give you that one. Though if the Beatles were still around and a band, I bet they could still rock it and we'd still watch.

I saw the Clydesdale commercial (on Facebook) and it's obviously my favorite. Mainly because all the Clydesdale commercials are my favorite.

I do love that the game was so boring that they blew out the lights for 30 minutes so there'd be some action and drama for you guys. *clapping* Way to go!

Great correlation to writing. *LOL* You should always do the Monday After Super Bowl blog...

I stand behind my "in this century" remark. Madge would have been fine if she stopped pretending she's 25. Not that she doesn't look amazing, but still.

The tweets during the blackout were the most entertaining part of the evening. From "Who didn't pay the light bill?!" to the guessed that this was New Orleans getting back at Goodell for ruining the Saints' season. LOL!

Another vote for the Clydesdales - plus Budweiser launched a "name our new foal" campaign on twitter at the same time - pure marketing genius to tweet images of a brand new foal right when your commercial starts trending.

Some very smart social media marketing there.

I'm not a Beyonce fan so I didn't watch the halftime show at all. I had recorded the puppy bowl so I just switched over to start watching that.

I watched the first half and I watched Beyonce. Then I put the kids to bed. They stayed up late because the oldest was rooting for the Ravens and the DH thought it was too cute to make him go early. He (the oldest) also watched the halftime show with me. I love a man who can get into football and still appreciate Beyonce. :)

Speaking of appreciate Beyonce.... Man, that girl's got some pipes. So talented.

But, I was really only watching for her. After she went, I watched Downton.

Marnee Bailey said...

Oh, and I liked the Dorito goat commercial. Funny. :)

Great blog, Terri! I enjoyed the game, the blackout (Twitter entertainment was great!)and especially the commercials. I stopped being a 49ers fan when they kicked Joe Montana out of the family and have never been a Ravens fan but I do love football. I was cheering for a good game and awesome commercials.

I enjoyed Beyonce. Thought she put on a great show. Not a Madonna fan (never been one).

The Bud Clydesdale commercial was my favorite. Also enjoyed Dodge Ram's "God made a farmer." Very powerful. The Doritos goat was cute as was the "dad dressing up." I also liked the Tide stain, the Kia Space Babies and the Coke race across the desert.

One of my favorite tweets during the blackout was from Word of Mouth: "Programming Note: Netflix has Heidi on demand." Most of you are too young to remember the game that inspired it, but I was a teenager yelling at the TV along with my dad the Sunday night that NBC cut away from the Oakland Raiders/New York Jets game (with 65 seconds remaining in the game) to air Heidi on Wonderful World of Disney at their scheduled TV time. The Raiders scored two touchdowns in 9 seconds to win the game and no TV network has ever done that since.

Terri Osburn said...

OMG! PJ, I don't think I've ever heard of that. Or if I have, I'd forgotten. Now I get why that tweet was so funny. LOL! I have to give that crowd credit. They were completely calm. Though likely well liquored up by then. LOL! All the tweets about Bane flying into the stadium were kind of funny. I haven't even seen that movie but I knew what they were talking about.

Just letting you know that I looked in. I wouldn't dare to comment as 'Super Bowl' is a total mystery to me.

Good to see America having fun though. LOL

Over here the six nations tournament (rugby) and the FA Cup competition (soccer) draws the crowds.
The BBC never messes up the spectacle with commercials Thank God!

Terri Osburn said...

They don't run commercials during the big games??? Are you kidding? What kind of commercialistic society is that? LOL!

I might have just made up a work.

We Americans commercialize everything. We're annoying that way. And we don't get all the fuss about rugby and soccer, so no worries, Q.

Terri, another interesting fact from the Heidi Bowl (that's what the media dubbed it): So many people were calling the network (this was before internet, folks) that they jammed the lines and NBC couldn't get calls out to their affiliates to tell them to switch back to the game. Starting the following Sunday (and continuing today), every network that televises sports has dedicated communications pathways to their affiliates. The Heidi scars ran deep. ;-)

Great recap, Ter. Not a huge football fan but the DH is and was watching down on the big screen - we all kind of drifted in and out all night. My son and I watched the SNL first 5 years retrospective. That was pretty interesting and it was fun to watch all the skits I grew up with my son.

I did however run downstairs when Beyonce came on and whenever the DH screamed louder than usual (just to check out what the fuss was all about). Missed all the commercials so I'll have to go online and see for myself what you're all talking about. Sound like you and the DH are in align again - He was for the 49ers too; hasn't stopped complaining about Ray Lewis all season; and mentioned that the Go Daddy commercial was just wrong.

I'm not a huge Beyonce fan but was just glad she stayed fully clothed (barely); didn't flip off the American public; and no inappropriate F-bombs were dropped. The Superbowl half time show is becoming a who can top who for really offensive, bad behavior lately.

I'm with you Marn, I wanted to watch Downton Abbey. I set my DVR instead and will watch it this afternoon while everyone is away! :)

Terri Osburn said...

Irish - I heard this morning that Go Daddy commercial took 45 takes. *shivers* Next year, I'm coming to your house for the game! They'll replay Downton late Saturday night or I'll watch it online before then. Either way, I'll see it before the next episode.

Very true about the half time show. But I also think everyone gets so worked up about the silliest things anymore. Supposedly Flacco dropped an F-bomb in the post-game coverage and those Parents Council idiots are already demanding punishment. *rolls eyes*

I'm not a sports fan and if I were, the Packers would be my team. Didn't even know who was in the SB until...yesterday. The TV didn't come on until near halftime, when my husband came in from the workshop and plunked down on the couch.

Me, I was in my office writing a sex scene. I could sorta hear what was going on--the blackout--and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Bane and the subsequent explosions and mayhem. Didn't happen, color me disappointed.

"I admit, I’m just happy they’re featuring an artist who has had a hit song in this century." Know what? The 80s were my formative years and I'm so, so, so, ovah Madonna, the Stones, even Bon Jovi and Springsteen. Respect them as artists, but...meh, good music has been produced through all the decades, including now.

Oh, and the commentators suck. Dude, nobody cares what you would do or how you'd run the play. Seriously. STFU.

Hellie Sinclair said...

See, I've only seen 4-5 seconds of the GoDaddy commercial and it grosses me out so. 45 takes? GEE, I wonder which one of them insisted on that? I'm guessing NOT the supermodel. *eyeroll*

The Heidi Bowl stuff is HYSTERICAL! And of course, it happened on NBC. Bruhahahaaha! And was the Super Bowl shown earlier in the day or something? I can't imagine showing Heidi that late at night when your likely audience was asleep.

Terri Osburn said...

Come sit next to me, Pat. *makes room on bench* If I never hear Shannon Sharp's voice again, I will die happy. I couldn't stomach even a minute of the all day pre-show. One giant excuse for old has-been ball players to pretend they're still playing. And to wear their $4K suits. (Seriously. Who dressed Cowher?)

I'm so with you on the music. I grew up in the 80s. Totally respect those older artists. But come on! Give us someone under 50 for heaven's sake. I enjoyed this years show, even if there was a little more dancing than singing. That's okay with me. She had a very limited time to put on the show of her life.

Terri Osburn said...

The Heibi Bowl. That's too funny. I bet that was an afternoon game. Or at least started earlier than they do these days. You know someone lost their job over that snafu!

irisheyes said...

Okay, I watched all the commercials and the Clydesdale one is my favorite. I'm a sentimental! I cried. And once I realized what was happening in the Go Daddy commercial I screeched and closed my eyes. LOL

Hellie Sinclair said...

I had to go look it up. 1968. And then I was like, "Wasn't that like only the second time they even had the Super Bowl? Nice, guys."--and it was. Guess they realized that the super bowl was a bit more popular than they anticipated. *LOL* Haven't made the same mistake since.

Now when games run over and I have to listen to freaking coverage I couldn't care less about--now I know who to blame. Heidi.

Hellie Sinclair said...

Had to find the Audi commercial. NICE.

Bravery. It's What Defines Us.

Very good slogan.

Leslie Langtry said...

The GoDaddy one made me throw up in my mouth a little. I liked the kid who picked his football team and the Doritos commercial with the goat. Didn't know goats could scream like that...

Terri Osburn said...

That was a pretty weird sound. LOL! I missed the dude in the wedding dress. What was that about? And the kid in the Play 60 commercial was cute. "I'm just warming up my arm."

P. Kirby said...

I didn't see the commercial, but I've heard some dog-awful sounds coming from my neighbor's goats. Sounds like child being tortured. So they are capable of awful sounds.

According to my husband's description--I didn't see it--the guy in a wedding dress advert was kind of cute. When I get home, I'll probably watch some of the ads. (Not GoDaddy. Their CEO, CFO, owner, whatever, thinks slaughtering elephants is fun. Asshole! Would never ever in a billion years buy anything from GoDaddy.)

Leslie Langtry said...

The guy in the wedding dress was cute. There just weren't enough good ads this year.

Terri Osburn said...

I know some people thought the Oreo cookie one was funny, but I didn't like it. The VW ones were odd. German engineering made a guy from Minnesota talk like he's from Jamaica. Wha....?

Terri Osburn said...

And for those who missed the Calvin Klein commercial.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oBHwMKXWeE

Hellie Sinclair said...

Sadly I still like the Clydesdale one better--even if he is the "skinny" muscular type I like. *LOL* The music...and the posing... Meh.

Maureen said...

Heidipocalyps. Well, once upon a time, The Wonderful World of Disney did have some clout...

I missed the first half, got home in time to ignore half time, saw the Clydesdale commercial a watched my DH wipe tears away.

I was wondering if SanFrancisco would be standing this morning...wasn't sure if a winning celebration or a losing riot would be worse. Seems it was pretty quiet...

Maureen said...

I did see the CK commercial during Elementary and wasn't impressed. I'm with Hellie, show me the horses.

Maureen said...

Wait a minute, did I read that right? You're going to wait until Saturday late to watch Downton? You expect to dodge spoilers until then?

Optimist!

Terri Osburn said...

After people catch up on their DVRs and drop vague comments around the web, they'll stop talking until next week. And if not, it's my own fault. I'm fine with it.

Hellie Sinclair said...

In fact the guy in the horse ad was cuter than the CK model...but that's probably just me. I like a bit scruffy on the face.

Terri Osburn said...

Dudes. Focus here. No one is suggesting you marry the CK guy. You don't even have to date him. It's just a nice 30 second distraction. Geez! LOL!

Hellie Sinclair said...

Hey, if people can focus on Beyonce's outfit and say "I think it wasn't appropriate for prime-time television!" and bitch about her dancing more than singing--I can nitpick just as ridiculously at the CK guy.

Which Beyonce was way hot. (Hotter than the CK guy. Okay! I'm done! I'll quit!)

Terri Osburn said...

There was nothing wrong with Beyonce's outfit. That's the dumbest thing. Goodness. It was beautiful and tasteful. She was wearing more than the cheerleaders!

Hellie Sinclair said...

I know! And more covered than most of the "wardrobe malfunctions" of the past decade.

Haters gonna hate. *LOL*

Now my receptionist--he's a lover. In fact, when we brought up Beyonce and I said, "That woman looked damn hot", he took this as permission to how he'd like to make Beyonce's babies...so that cut off that convo because we didn't want those details.

Terri Osburn said...

I hope he realizes someone else is already making Beyonce's babies. LOL!

pjpuppymom said...

Hellie, the Heidi Bowl was a regular season game, not the Super Bowl. There was a really intense rivalry (animosity) between the two teams. That's why people went nuts. And, yes, games were shown earlier in the day then. It was an eye-opener to everyone about how popular NFL football had become with the general public.

pjpuppymom said...

What grossed me out more than anything on that Go Daddy commercial was the audio. *shudders*

Maureen said...

I just watched a ton of the commercials. I sorta liked the whole whispering fight in the library... ;-) And the Rock's milk commercial.

Terri Osburn said...

The Rock's milk commercial is another one I missed. I think the dog had to go out. I need to go find that one.

Terri Osburn said...

Oy! PJ, don't remind me. I had to look away, but then I could still hear it. Ick!

Maureen said...

It's always so sweet to see the Rock with little girls. I mean he looks so hard, but does the softie thing so well...

Terri Osburn said...

Which is why he's the stand-in inspiration for my next hero. Randy might be roughly the size of a city bus, but he's truly a teddy bear. A Zen teddy bear. LOL! With a quick smile.

Maureen said...

You'll love the commercial.
