Drinking at Disney - The Pirate Way!

I'm back from a 17 person family vacation!  Woo hoo!  Sure, it was hard leaving the 80 degrees of Orlando for the -14 degrees of Illinois - but I have to admit that I'm happy to be back.
On the plane on the way down south, I was thinking - what would the Pirates do at Disney?  Drink of course!  And that's what I did.  I share with you now, my drinking adventures!
To begin with, our hotel, Shades of Green, had a deal where you bought a draft of Paulander Beer, and kept the glass, for $1 off all refills.  I used it liberally throughout the week, naturalmente - even though my doctor doesn't want me drinking beer (shhhh...don't tell her).  Tom was sad they didn’t have the same deal for scotch.

With my cousin, Stacey, drinking Lost on Safaris at Tusker House in Animal Kingdom.  Lots of lovely rum!

2nd or maybe 3rd Lost on Safari at Tusker House with nice man who paid for it.  An hour later, I had a Tusker Ale (doctor be damned!) with lunch.

Best milkshake ever!  With my niece, Emily, and Marsha’s Milkshake – a chocolate shake with a generous dose of Bailey’s and Kahlua – at the Sci Fi Drive-In in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  They even had light up ice cubes and real whipped cream on top!

Sadly, no alcohol is allowed in the Magic Kingdom (I really must write a letter...after all, they have the Pirates of the Caribbean ride there).  This is the closest thing, LeFou’s Brew at Gaston’s Pub in the new Fantasyland.  It just needs some rum… Notice that this is the only photo of me with a closed lip smile.  Now you know why.

Same day, this time at EPCOT, in the World Showcase in Italy.  Found a little hideaway called The Wine Cellar.  Stayed there for two hours…

In France, I discovered Nuvo – a French, sparkling vodka that has my favorite things...champagne and sparkling vodka.  There are 2 bottles right now in my fridge…

Shopping at Downtown Disney was fun – so was drinking Cotton-tini’s at TREX with Stacey’s husband, Rick and cousin Shawn.  You pour the cosmo over cotton candy in your glass.  The ultimate combo - sugar and booze!

At the Polynesian Beach the last day.  This is a Banana Cabana.  I had two.

Oh yeah, and we did other stuff, like, with the kids and whatever.  And there were guys in costumes who looked a little funny after a couple of drinks.  I'm pretty sure we had fun.

Next time, I'm taking the pirates with me!  Now THAT would be an adventure...

Your trip to Disney looks a LOT different than mine did. LOL!!

But this? This looks like so much fun. And that milkshake? Yes please.

I'm glad you had a good time.

We probably aren't going back to the most magical place on earth until the boys are a bit older. And don't need to nap. Probably a few more years.

We did have our character lunch at Tusker House and the food was great.

I'm in!! I can be ready in 5 minutes. I've only been to Disney for the RWA conferences, which means very little time in the parks. Chance had a fancy drink in an English pub in Epcot back in 2010. I can't remember what it was, just that it was huge and didn't effect her at all. I'd have been on the floor. (I'm a total lightweight. Especially for a pirate.)

Looks like a perfect pirate adventure!

I live here in Orlando so we try to hit Disney as often as possible. It was part of our courtship and the hubby even proposed at the Grand Floridian Resort.

Next time any of you pirates are in my neighborhood you have to tell me!

I would totally do the banana cabanas and the rum drinks...and probably the beer. (I couldn't do the milkshake--dairy and alcohol never end well with me.) And I am absolutely cracking up that at the Magic Kingdom is the only pic of you not smiling with teeth...and there was no alcohol involved.

I bet parents would have a LOT more fun at Magic Kingdom with their strung out kids if they were allowed a little booze to take the edge off. A damned shame.

Never been to Disney. When I went to Orlando...I did the Harry Potter tour instead. For obvious reasons. Like I'm an utter geek. But it sounds like it would be crazy fun with the pirates. :) Are we allowed to take flasks into the Magic Kingdom?

I would take you all with me anytime! We only go in the off-season - the crowds are light and the weather is usually good.

Every drink was wonderful - and Marn - the Tusker House had great food. We didn't know it was character dining till we got there and my 5 year old grand niece hid under the table everytime a character came into the room.

Yeah, my trip to Disney World didn't look like that either, Marn. LOL I don't think I'd be able to keep up if I had that much alcohol in me - tends to put me to sleep instead of rev me up.

I think I'm going to plan my next Disney trip your way, though, Leslie. I'll have to see if the DH can wrangle another conference there. Those trips are always waaaaay different than the family trips. :)

I've always wanted to go there with my large family (30+ people), but I'm thinking it may be a logistical nightmare. Did you enjoy the whole big family thing or was it a little too crazy? Every time we've gone in the past you see these groups of people with the same colored t-shirts and some name printed on the back - it looks hokey but kind of fun.

This was my first trip like this, actually. We've been to DW 3 times prior and DL once. The kids are now teenagers and they wanted to run around with their teen cousins - so it worked out great (once we implanted them with GPS chips). They just checked in now and then. My cousins with the little kids did their own thing.

A word of advice, know HOW your family likes to tour. This was my side and my uncle's side. My side gets up early and goes like maniacs until collapsing at the end of the day. My uncle's is far more laid back - sleeping in, taking your time, more leisurely (and I'm sure they are on to something there...). We had problems the first day with these contrasting styles. By day two we had it figured out.

Go for it.

And yes, the pirates need a trip.

Leslie - my almost 2 yr old cried any time the characters came near him. LOL! Like, "WTF is with these creepers wearing the stuffed animals!? Did they murder the stuffed animals to wear their flesh!?!!? MOOOOOMMMMM!!!!"

LOL! This same niece, when she was 3, wanted to be Elmo for Halloween. So her parents bought her an Elmo suit. When they showed it to her she screamed and hid - she thought they'd killed and skinned Elmo.

Wow. You guys have some imaginative kids around. LOL!

OK, so a few things. First, you are CRACKING me up. 2nd, I have the perfect idea for you and your writer friends. You should go on a Disney cruise (great for adults, even if kids aren't in tow) and do a mini NaNoWriMo, maybe a NaNoWriWe (week). OR, you could go on a Regent Seven Seas cruise where the drinks are included and forget the writing part. Remember - I'm your favorite travel agent... I'm your favorite travel agent... I'm your favorite travel agent... leslien@bottravel.com.

Can we pressgang this woman into service? Though I love the irony of a group of pirates going on a cruise. ;)

How do the ice cubes light up??

Drinking at Disney should be required. You did we'll! I don't remember the name if that concoction but it was delish. A variety of rum punch! Gods we should plan a pirate gathering there. Avast!

Leslie Langtry said...

Yea to the cruise! That would be hilarious! We could get several weeks worth of blogs out of that! Not sure we'd have any time to write - or that the writing wouldn't look like, "iluvu! snertch!"

Kendra - i don't know. They have a light and battery inside of them. just part of the disney magic i guess. they're in the freezer now.

BTW, Leslie the travel agent is an old friend of mine who recently reconnected! We were in the same sorority at the University of Iowa back in the 80's. OUr sorority sisters would take us out drinking and say, "This is my sister, Leslie and this is my other sister, Leslie!" Press gang her and make her go with us!!!

Maureen said...

Pirate cruise that includes the drinks? Love to see what we'd write... Bookmarking her email!

You sure know how to travel, Leslie. I want a Bailey's chocolate milkshake STAT. It sounds amazing! And it looks like that that guy who bought you a drink stuck around for a while. Hope Mr. Langtry didn't get too jealous. ;)

Great blog! Do you have any helpful hints for aspiring writers?
I'm hoping to start my own blog soon but I'm a little
lost on everything. Would you recommend starting with a free platform like Wordpress or go for a paid option?
There are so many choices out there that I'm completely confused .. Any ideas? Kudos!
