More Than a Little Back Hair...

So the witching hour is almost upon us and that means the theme on the ship this week has been everything Halloweinie. So, let's go there. And yes, I meant to spell it that way. You'll understand if you keep reading.

This is the one time of year everyone gets to be someone or something that they're not. Unless you're an actor or actress, then just play along. We all talked last week about what we would want to be and no surprise slutty pretty much summed us all up. Big shocker!

But what about what we're willing to go for. Paranormals have been sweeping the romance world for a few years now (maybe more, I did no research for this one) so it stands to reason women must be liking those vampires, werewolves and general shape shifters of all kinds. Perhaps lusting after is more accurate. These guys are clearly Alphas, no one would argue that, and we hear over and over again how women want the guy that takes charge. He's powerful. Has lots of money (shut up Cap'n). But most of all, he's a warrior. A fighter who can protect us or save us from anything. But would we really want our guy to shape shift?

This is the question for today. In real life, would you really go there? Would you do him even if you knew ten minutes ago he was on all fours sniffing (or licking) who knows what? Would you go down if you knew that too good of a performance on your part could have the man sprouting wings and literally reaching new heights without you. How about those demon killers? Would it turn you on IRL if you knew he'd blown up a dozen or so bad guys that day?

Yes, this is all fantasy. But there's always a little truth in our dreams. Could you handle the hair balls, fireballs and possible anemia to have one of these bad boys? Be honest, we'll never tell. Honor among pirates and all that…

PS: I found Ash just for you ladies. LOL! I'm paying PM Lisa back for the lovely pic she sent all of us over the weekend. *w*

I think witches and magic and the like are all cool, but the hairy guys or the ones overlong in the tooth leave me cold.

I do enjoy a good Alpha though, but only to read. Me hubby, he be the classic Beta and I love that about him.

Am I lame?

TiffinaC said...

hubba hubba.... since werewolves DON'T exist..can't say I'd do one :D But there is something very appealing about that Alpha warrior male... sigh...

That's why I write them. And I prefer the warm blooded were's over the blood suckers. And they only way I would want my man down on four is oh...wait, is there a rating here? LOL! Well I'm sure you can figure it out *w*

terrio said...

Not lame at all, Marnee Jo. I'm right there with you. I either do not have enough imagination or am not able to suspend belief enough to enjoy paras. A little magic, maybe a fairy flyling around or even some psychic abilities I can handle. A change in species is not for me.

Tiff - you aren't supposed to point out they don't exist. The question is, IF they did, would you go there? I realize that's a stupid question for you but humor me. I can't imagine vacuuming my sheets after a night of fun. LOL!

TiffinaC said...

ewwwww.... HE wouldn't be hairy while you did him, sheesh.. now who's the one that needs to suspend beliefs.

terrio said...

But he was hairy before you did him and he will be again after.

And for the record, I worked with a woman who had a very hairy husband and she told me once she had to sweep her sheets. LOL! So that can happen IRL and I totally stole it from Janna. Don't tell her.

Marnee Jo said...

Eek, back hair.

I am with you about the paras, Ter. I like Gena Showalter and some of the lighter hearted ones. And psychic stuff, etc, all fine. But, I have a hard time with the heavy, dramatic ones.

I think it might be that I can't suspend that much belief either. Which is ridiculous as I'll read a Regency with lords and ladies and the like and happily ever after book after book is fine. But, something with shapeshifters is a bit hard for me. Go figure.

irisheyes said...

I'm afraid this is where I turn conventional. I've read about vampires and enjoyed the story. And the supernatural powers are kinda cool and I could deal with that, but I haven't read the werewolves or shapeshifters yet and the interest just isn't there. I'm afraid in RL I wouldn't go there. I'm with you Ter, cleaning up the mess would be a huge headache. I won't even allow dogs in this house unless they don't shed!!!!

As for the man I'd go for in RL, mine right now is a beta and I kinda like that. Although, I am sort of drawn to the alpha men in the books I read. I love Marcus Westcliff, Wulf Bedwyn and Bey Malloren. I'm more into the alpha/beta - the guy who can take charge and protect when need be, but when it comes to his woman he's sensitive and understanding (Jack Sheridan, Virgin River). Go figure - I want it all!

terrio said...

Marnee Jo - it must be something with me and anything other worldly. I've never been into Star Trek or the modern day outer space ones or even Buffy. Though I admit to a deep fondness for Han Solo in my youth. But who among us can claim immunity from the original Star Wars? I ask you...

Irish - I'm with you on the Alpha/Beta mix. That's what I like as well. Intelligence, wit, charm and understanding win out over pushy and overbearing any day.

Being I like my men rather hairless--think Orlando Bloom--I have to vote NO on the werewolves or catmen (I'd be allergic anyway) and whathaveyou that's hairy.

I could possibly handle the vampire--I do prefer being up all night than being in sunlight (as my skin color can attest), bats don't freak me out, and blood doesn't make me hyperventilate. I hate talking with a lisp though; I'm barely understood now with my canines as it is. Plus I prefer my men to have a heartbeat. Still, Gary Oldman as Dracula? Yeah...that'd be hot.

But what about fairies (and I don't mean the one I dated in 1997)--I mean, Orlando Bloom, Lord of the Ring fairies...now that'd be cool. Magic. Hairless. A pulse. And usually their glamour can transmute to make the ones they love look beautiful too...so I'd get to (finally) look as hot.

I'll chant "I believe in fairies" all day if it got me a date with Orlando Bloom.

TiffinaC said...

I'll take a fae man... Karen Marie Moning writes one of the hottest Fae ever...sigh... Adam Black... Now that man is ALL bad boy Alpha!

And were's don't have to be hairy in their human form, just when they change, and I ain't into bestiality... hehe

Lissa said...

I've tried numerous times to read paranormal and fantasy fiction but I just can't enjoy something I find so unbelievable.

Give me an alpha male anyday:)Or a pirate with a really big sword...

terrio said...

Lissa - how I wish we could post that pic. *sigh*

Fran - I can't go the vamp route. Too skinny. I've never seen a big boy vamp, have you? Now that I think about it, Antonio made for one hot little vampy. I'll have to rethink this.

But I could handle fairy magic stuff. Nora has some fun fairy men and I really enjoyed those. I'll need to pick up this book of which Tiff speaks. Sounds like a para I could handle.

Sin said...

Alpha men leaving me panting along after them like a bitch in heat. I dunno about being with a were, but I'll take a vamp. Hell, I'll take two or three vamps. I prefer to be up in the dark, I prefer no sunlight. I like everything that a vamp has to offer me, as long as he's an alpha. I can't do the beta thing. I'm rather strong willed and overbearing. I need someone just as much of a tyrant as myself.

I'm with Hellion as well... I could find myself liking a fae man like O. Bloom's character in the LOTR.

TiffinaC said...

It's the immortal highlander, and though you don't have to read her other books, it makes adam that much more yummy, knowing his dark past. He's one of my fav bad boys.

And I'm with you sin, I'm an overbearing bitch on the best of days... a man needs to be very strong to stand up to me.

Sin said...

Amen Tiff. I say, if you can't bring it, don't come at all. *grin* I'm reading a paranormal/fantasy series by Keri Arthur right now that's pretty good. Half breed heroine. Very interesting. Lots of sex. Just how I like my books. :)

TiffinaC said...

I've read all the Riley Jenson's Sin... They are AWESOME books... Where are you in the series? The next release (book6) comes out in April...she's got a magic series starting up in Jan... I love her work, and her hero's wolves are all Alpha so are her vamps

terrio said...

You gals keep pointing out that these para guys are all Alpha but isn't that a given? Since I don't read them I have to ask, is there such a thing as a Beta vamp, were or para hero?

TiffinaC said...

I seemed to have hijacked your blog, Ter.

Anyways... read some Ward, those vamps ain't whimpy, but build like brick walls... sigh...

Yeah it's a given, but in a pack there are lesser beings... they just don't usually get their stories told.

MsHellion said...

Don't let the skinniness fool you. Those bastards are STRONG. But I like my men on the scrawnier side. I've never liked the Arnold or Sly beefcake of men. They look absolutely ridiculous. The slightly scrawnier versions look awesome in those 18th century outfits I like so much...

I fell for Vin Diesel and thought I'd lost my mind. (Actually I knew I did because the boy cannot act.)--but it's not so much his build as it is his voice. I'd do a lot for that voice.

MsHellion said...

Typically these guys are alpha--but as Sin will rant, some of them end up turning into great big wussies.

Don't get her started.

terrio said...

Hijack away! I'm too busy fighting with this bitch in my office to play hostess full time. LOL! Man, being professional is NOT easy.

So some of these boys start out fire and brimstone and turn little straw hut? That's a shame.

Tell us about it, Sin. LOL!

Sin said...

I love JRW's Black Dagger Brotherhood series!!

I'll tell you Terr, I think you could handle the books. Most of them puss out by the end and end up totally whipped. But that's okay, because they are hot, solid muscle, oozing testosterone and mean as shit in the beginning. I LOVE them in the beginning. Zsadist was my favorite until he softened, and he needed to soften up if he was ever going to have a mate, but still.. I would've took him how he was. Especially in the second book *fanning self* Just something about the look in his eyes when he told her to get on her knees made me want to jump in the book and do his bidding. OMG.

Rhage's book, Lover Eternal, is my favorite book to this date in the series. I have a desktop picture of what I think Rhage looks like in my mind and every time I look at it I just want to cry. The book was very good. And he didn't puss out on me at the end.

Tiff, I just finished Tempting Evil last night. Great series! I'd read Kissing Sin when it first came out (Hellion will tell you I never start a series in the beginning, I dive right in) and I didn't like it. So I shelved the series and just a few weeks ago someone told me that I really needed to give the series another try, so I did, and I'm really glad I did. Tempting Evil was the best I've read so far. I heard that Embraced by Darkness was the best written to this date. I didn't know that there was another coming out so soon. Early next year will be very good for me with new book releases.

Do you read Kim Harrison, Tiff? Terr, I think you'd like KH's Rachel Morgan series.

TiffinaC said...

Yes I read KH I love Rachel and her stories kick ass... I read just about EVERY paranormal out there as long as it's not campy, funny, humourous...unless I need a pick me up, then I pick up an L. Sands.

Well, Embraced by Darkness is the best...and it will leave you SCREAMING NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! at the end. I think KA is one of my favourite para writers. And I love that the put them in the romance section at the store, when it says fantasy on the spine.

Girl, we need to talk books, I think we have a lot in similar.

Marnee Jo said...

I realized as I as reading through these posts that I am really out to lunch on the para front. I haven't heard of many of these series and I wonder if I should give some shot, just for kicks. I liked the sound of the Adam Black one you were talking about Tiff....

And I must agree that Orlando Bloom LOTR was the hottest fairy I could have imagined. Yum. And even though he's a tad bit scrawny for my liking (again we agree Ter), he's tall and I can forgive scrawny for tall and hot any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Oh, and I think I had my first girly fantasy over Han Solo. *sigh*

terrio said...

*high fives Marnee*

We do agree on quite a bit. I've heard of the Ward and maybe Kenyon stuff (which I'm surprised haven't come up) but this other stuff is news to me. If you try them, we'll expect you to report back. LOL!

MsHellion said...

I would do any of Kenyon's DarkHunters in heartbeat. Except Ravyn, whose both DH *and* were-hunter--because he's a kitty, and I'd be allergic.

And as for a Kenyon paranormal, I love her Lords of Avalon series. I wonder when she'll be writing a new one of those. I hope it's within the next year or so.

terrio said...

Aha! One I actually have on the TBR. The Lords of Avalon one. And I totally admit I wouldn't have kept that one if I hadn't met Sherrilyn in person and found she is one of the sweetest people ever!

MsHellion said...

You're absolutely crazy if you had not kept that novel. Kerrigan has got to be one of the freaking hottest characters ever. *swoons* More so than even...dare I say...Zarek. (Zarek, I'm so sorry, baby, you know I love you.)

Now that you brought her up, I just ordered 20$ of DarkHunter stuff at Amazon!

terrio said...

I kept a couple of little things I picked up when I got that book for you. I have a pin that says Bite Me and a Dark Hunter temporary tattoo. They were so cute I couldn't resist! LOL!

Sin said...

OMG. The Kerrigan! Loved him and the evil within.

Tiff, do you read LKH? Anita Blake? I must admit that I've missed the last three books, but I plan on catching back up. I heard that the Harlequin was really quite good and very reminicent of early AB.

I have to say that I picked up a L. Sands book last February just as a last minute read and enjoyed it. WAY too lighthearted for me as far as vamps go. I like my vamps served with a side of serious badass. LOL

The Outlaw Demon Wails comes out in February I think. I can't wait. After For a Few Demons More, I can't wait to see where K. Harrison takes Rachel and the gang. And I must say that as much as I love Kist. I LOVE Minias. And I have to confess that I love Al as well. I have a thing for insane demons.. it seems. LOL

Marnee Jo! If lighthearted stuff is your kind of read, you might wanna try Lyndsay Sands vamp series. They are really actually quite good. There is a vamp series by Linda Lael Miller that is decent as well. (I can't remember the titles off the top of my head right now, but I know one of them is Forever in the Night). Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan books gave me nightmares in the beginning when Al crosses over from the demon world. But Kim Harrison is an EXCELLENT writer. So is J.R. Ward, who writes romance under the name Jessica Bird.

TiffinaC said...

Yes I read LKH, that's what got me on the para binge. Well Actually, I started with Poppy Z. Brite. But she doesn't write horror anymore. Exquiste corspe is one of her best! Though that one only has para elements.

You might like LA Banks, Sin. I don't I gave up halfway through the third book it just wasn't for me, but a lot of people that like KH, LKH like her stuff.
Do you read the dresden books? not sexy but awesome para's. Jim Butcher

Also you should try the black jewels trilogy Anne Bishop. I have a feeling you will love the smokin' hot demon's in that book. like SMOKIN' HOT!

TiffinaC said...

oh and I haven't' read the harlequin yet. I actually like her merry gentry series more. but they are on my tbr.

Sin said...

I've tried to read an LA Banks novel and couldn't get into it. I can't remember the name of it. If I look at the covers then I could probably tell you which one it was. Didn't like it. It just wasn't for me. I've never heard of Anne Bishop but I will look her up. Thanks for the tip, Tiff!

And as for the AB series or the MG series, I like MG for a different reason than I like AB. I'm not a stalkerish fan of LKH. Her books are hot, but not enough for me to fantasize about them constantly.

terrio said...

Just wanted to jump in and say I've read Poppy and she's awesome. It wasn't para or even a romance but it was still awesome.

Back to the blog already in progress...

TiffinaC said...

Okay Sin, you is startin' to scare me... lol... you didn't like Banks either, we read very simliar books... do you read christina feehan? I don't read the carpathian's but the ghostwalkers are all alpha... and the men in drake sister books are good too...they aren't para, the sisters are...but soon there will be male witches...

Marnee Jo said...

*returns Terrio's high five*

We do have similar tastes! I'll keep you in mind when I read something I really love!

Sin (and all really) - I'm bookmarking this post so that I can return to it when I manage to squeeze a half an hour of no-baby time to make it to Barnes and Nobles to restock my TBR list. You guys rock.
