Update: Outlander

I love that movie and that scene is one of my favorites. LOL!
I seem to take forever to read a book these days, but I find if I put it down for too long, I lose interest. Which is not good. I've started maybe 3 in the last month or less. Haven't finished any of them yet.

I think that's the problem. I keep putting it down and then I want to do something else instead. And it's not that Outlander is boring. Once I start reading, it's fine--I'm sucked in, but I think it's maybe a slower going novel than I'm used to??
For me, it's not size that matters, but, ahem, what the author does with the plot, characters, etc. I've struggled, uphill in a snowstorm, thinking, "Will this fucking book ever end?" with 200-page books, and zoomed through 500-page tomes.
All depends on the book. Nowadays, it's a hella lot harder to catch my attention than it used to be.
Currently reading Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, a YA, and loving it. Bought it yesterday via a review of another of her books. The voice captivated me and I was bored with current reads.
I found Gabaldon a bit slow for my taste .... great for sending me to sleep though! ... started outlander a couple of years ago and still haven't finished book one. LOL
I finished 'The Horse Dancer' by Jojo Moyes and really liked it. I'm going to try more of her books I think.
Currently listening to 'Bewitching' by Jill Barnett read by Anne Johnstone-Brown. Parts had me interested but alas some of it sent me to sleep. Could be the narrator, making it seem silly, or perhaps it's imbibed with a sleep spell. As its a Hellie rec I'm going to finish it. Could be I just haven't reached the good stuff yet! LOL

I've been perusing YA titles, looking for my next big series I'm going to fall in love with, but haven't found it yet.
I'm horrible at sticking with big books. If I can't power through and get it down with a massive stay up late binge, then I'm not likely to get it down. I seldom have a DNF, but it can take me way too long to finish a big book...
Save for nonfiction. It can take me weeks to plow through a nonfiction book. I'll pick up easier, short reads and start/finish them during breaks with nonfiction...
And yeah, that is a great scene in that movie... ;-)
Q, people usually love (or hate) Jill Barnett--and it has everything to do with the silliness. When Jill Barnett does silly, I adore it. I totally eat it up; and I enjoy the naivety of her heroines and the joy they bring. However, I have read other authors in which they were also doing "silliness" and I set the book on fire after because I couldn't stand the silliness at all. So because it's a humor factor, it's definitely subjective. *LOL* I hope you don't hate it, but I blame you if you avoid my recommendations of her from now on. (Though I adored her book WONDERFUL too--where the heroine makes ale, hysterical!)
Mo, I'm the same way with non-fiction, but I expect it to be a bit of a "trudge"--but my fiction, I expect to zoom along!

I'm in research mode for a new project, so I've been reading non-fiction today, mostly books and articles on gated communities and Generation X. Interesting stuff though, and I've added some of the details on gated communities to my random notes for fiction folder. You never can tell. I might decide to write "The Billionaire's Secret Baby" and need it for background. :)
I'm with Pat on length. I've had to force myself to finish novellas, and I sometimes stay up til 3 or 4 a. m. finishing a long novel. I may do that tonight since I just got an eARC of Sarah MacLean's No Good Duke Goes Unpunished, a book I am really eager to read.
I confess I've never read Outlander. I tried it in the early days of the old EJ bb at the urging of other bon bons, but it just was not my cop of tea.
