Candi Wall Talking Prime Pitching Opportunities
As if the question ‘Wanna pitch to an agent or editor’ isn’t
enough.
Hello! A huge thanks to all my wonderful hosts as I run all
over cyberspace talking about Agent/Editor Shop at the Musetracks blog.
In this crazy world of easy access to information, it’s also
easy to miss huge opportunities, or forget! Because I get so many comments that
writers either forgot, or didn’t know Musetracks did pitch sessions, I asked a
bunch of fellow writers, bloggers and readers to help me spread the word.
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Candi Wall, one of
the authors who co-contribute to the Musetracks blog. Jennifer Bray-Weber,
Marie-Claude Bourque, and Stacey Purcell are my super smart co-contributors and
goodness knows where I’d be without them!
I’ve been hosting acquiring Agents at Musetracks for almost
two years, and only recently, we decided to add editors as our guest. We’ve
been lucky to have agents like Melissa Jeglinski, Jessica Alvarez, Mollie
Glick, Becky Vinter, Kevan Lyon, Scott Eagan, Lois Winston, Jill Marsal,
Michelle Grajkowski, Kimberley Cameron, Emmanuella Alspaugh (now Morgan), Laura
Bradford, Jenny Bent, Sara Crowe, Weronika Janczuk and Stan Soper.
Our guest editors thus far have been Rhonda Penders w/ The
Wild Rose Press, Jennifer Miller w/ Samhain Publishing, Debby Gilbert w/ Soul
Mate Publishing, Beth Walker w/ Secret Cravings Publishing, and the editors at
Books To Go Now have booked three dates in the future!
What we offer is a ‘Pitch Day’. I only take 30 pitches, and
only the first thirty VIABLE pitches that come in on pitch day will be seen by
the agent or editor. And I will warn you, I’m a stickler for following
guidelines. If you don’t include exactly what is in the rules… I delete without
prejudice. And I delete quite a few. (And yes, I receive plenty of hate mail.)

I’ve also created a Yahoo group so writers can sign up to
receive Agent/Editor Shop updates. I only send messages with agent/editor
attendance updates, reminders of pitch dates, and any information about the
contests we run on pitch day. Usually a giveaway or a chance to comment for the
Top Pitch Slot. You can request to join here:
Bosun here. Thank you, Candi! Anyone taken advantage of the Musetracks pitch day before? I'm pretty sure I did back in the day and got a request out of it. Do you prefer pitching online, in email, or in person? Anyone never pitched before?

I've pitched online, in person, and I've sent queries over email. I'm an equal opportunity pitcher. Whatever gets me in front of someone when I have something to sell. Which I don't really right now.
Maybe in a few months.

Oddly enough, I spent years live on the radio with no problem, but get so nervous before an in-person pitch, I nearly pass out. Needless to say, opportunities like this, to pitch virtually, felt way less stressful to me.
The irony here is that I landed my agent with the biggest train wreck of an in-person pitch you could imagine. Goes to show, even if you're not at your best, the results can be positive.

I'm not sure I have much experience in any of them, though I imagine I would prefer the email version because I could edit my rambling mouth and take out all the "um"'s. :) Talking with me would never lead a reasonable person to believe I have a reasonable grasp of grammar, punctuation, and sentence style.
What a great opportunity and how generous of Candi and her co-hostesses to provide it!
I've written my share of query letters, but I probably would faint if I had to do an in-person pitch. I'm hyperventilating just thinking about it. :)
See, Janga, after all your years of teaching, it should be easy. But it's so different. I could stand on a stage in front of 5K screaming fans (screaming for the act I'm about to introduce, not me) and love it. Sitting down with one agent or editor puts the fear of God into me.

Gods, sorry crew! I was traveling most of the day... Pitching! I love to pitch! I love in person pitches the best of all!
I'm not kidding.
I'd rather be able to face-to-face pitch and sell. Part of what I'm selling is me, and the best person to do that is me. Not my email.
Second favorite is FB pitching. Did a three line one on that and got a request. It was fun.
Cold pitching is hell.

Agent/Editor Shop is super friendly. I know I'd be tongue-tied if I had to pitch in person! Terri, I agree with you! Public speaking - Pie. One on one pitch - instant ice sculpture!
That's kinda where the idea of Agent/Editor Shop came from. And as much as I claim to love my delete button, I'll be honest... I love helping fellow writers more! Don't EVER be afraid to contact me!
