I Need Motivation!!!

They really do.  I'm indebted to them, really I am.  I'm just kind of ready for them to stop now.  Please.

Okay, that sounds kind of schizophrenic.  I'm not crazy.  It's just time for the voices to take a vacation.  Maybe to Maui.  For a month.

I'm kind of full up on ideas.  My folders overfloweth with ideas.  I have so many books started that I get overwhelmed when I sit down to write.

And the fact of the matter is, I need to focus on one idea until it's done.  But I seem to have trouble in that area.

"Oh, take a notebook to bed to write down your ideas in the middle of the night" they say.  Bastards.  I've filled tons of notebooks with jibberish.  Apparently, when I wake up in the middle of the night to write down the idea that's surely going to make me a bestseller - I find in the morning stuff like "banana partridge orangutan goo."

As for the coherent ideas - there's just too damn many of them.  And on any given day, a different one sounds better than the rest.  That's great, and that's also not good.

I've also tried ginko - blahblahblah, mental exercises and one really weird audio tape that sounds like static that is supposed to boost productivity and focus.  Nothing works.

I'm going to have to take drastic measures.

I'm asking for an author sitter for Christmas.  Someone who will turn on my computer, make me sit down, choose a file for me, and sit across from me looking menacing until I crank out 20 pages.

I'm taking suggestions for this position.  Clearly it needs to be a man, and eye-candy is a must.  Any ideas?

Well...how about one of the Bombays?

And man, I know the feeling. I hear the voices, but then they slip away mid sentence and are replaced by deadly silence...

I'm thinking about one of those hand held game devices that will challenge me with mind puzzles... Because my brain is fractured...

I think your brain sounds like the slot machine at the casino, as if it's looking for the right answer to settle on.

I think you shouldn't fight it. Just go with it.

Wait, that's not what I'm supposed to be saying is it?

I bet the fact that I've been writing something else this week has something to do with that..... *shamed face*

Wouldn't a hot guy be even more distracting? Grandma Bombay would be perfect for that job. She's scary.

I don't get flooded with ideas too often, but if one pops up I just take notes and stick with what I'm doing. But then at this point I don't have a choice.

I'd suggest some mental conversations. Some reassurances to the muse that you WILL get to all those ideas but you must stick to one at a time. Say it out loud if you have to. (Goodness knows I talk to myself way too much.)

You say, "That's cool and all but we can't play with that one until we finish this one. If you want to play, you have to do this first." Remember who is in charge here. You can do it. It's like parenting. :)

What did Marn just confess? Is she cheating on her MS and not telling us???

*Super shamed face*

Yes. Yes I am.

You don't understand!!! It's not a new project, it's an older project that I'd seen in the past. It's so much better than my current project. I really think we're a match made in heaven.

You're going to make me come up there, aren't you? You know better, woman. He's luring you away with empty promises and sparkly plot twists but he'll grow difficult and taciturn just like they all do. Do NOT fall for it. You have a GH deadline to hit!

BEST. GIFT. EVER! I want an author sitter! And I'm not even amped up full of ideas. I'm just lazy and unmotivated! (Actually I'm "uninspired"--unmotivated is a negative connotation.)

I recommend Ryan Gosling. I'm loving all those memes with him on it with women's rights...and writing. *swoons* Adore him.

*pouts*

I know!! That's what I kept saying! I tried to resist. But my historical's characters are being so uncommunicative. It's like we don't know each other at ALL anymore.

OMG, did you see Crazy Stupid Love? So cute. And Ryan Gosling?! *swoon*

You're not alone, Marn. I did this yesterday. I did this with a contemporary. Hell, I even played with the idea of "Maybe I could work on Adam & Eve again. I think I've stepped away from them long enough." HOWEVER, I knew I was kidding myself and after I got done reading the old stuff, I put it away and did something else entirely for a while then when I worked on my story last night, I worked on the Cowboy one.

You can be nostalgic enough to have lunch with an old flame, but don't leave your husband for him--egads! Old Flame is still an old flame for a reason, you know--and then you're going to feel stupid and even more ashamed! Just look back and remember it fondly and then press on with your current one. Violet and Thad are doing great and it's a great story, really. *HUGS*

(Use of "Old Flame" and "Husband" in the analogy is clearly referring to STORIES and not actual men.)

SEE Crazy, Stupid Love? I *OWN* Crazy, Stupid Love! Love-love-love that movie. So brilliant.

Terri Osburn said...

Did someone say Ryan Gosling? Sweet baby peas that man is perfection. LOVE that movie, Marn. I think I own it too. LOL! Though it's probably still in the cellophane.

*hides from Hellie*

Hellie Sinclair said...

*eye roll* I already know you're hopeless. Your POTC movies and Harry Potter are probably still in their cellophane.

Marnee Bailey said...

I know you're right. But, I wrote over 2500 words on old project last night. The words were coming and I had to get it out of my system. Contemporary too. I think I needed to write with less formality or something.

I'm hoping to return to the historical today. It felt good to just write something that came easy, honestly. Gave me a confidence boast. I needed that.

Terri Osburn said...

Do I own POTC movies? Hmmm...I think I have one. But it's open. Not sure which HP's we have. I know we have the last 2 and we've watched them, so their open. Kiddo usually watches things at least once, and then we forget we have them. Though we've watched Moulin Rouge and Australia several times.

Terri Osburn said...

That would be "they're open". Dang it.

Hellie Sinclair said...

Well, don't apologize. There are many writers who write two books at the same time and can make it work. And if it gets you back on the main project, then I'd say it was a great thing. Everyone writes differently. We're just speaking from the experience of getting to chapter 8 of a book and abandoning it. *LOL*

Terri Osburn said...

Okay. So Marn needed a bit of a palate cleanser to get back on track. That's fare. But do not let that old flame drag you into heartbreak! Be strong!

Terri Osburn said...

Fare? Really??? WTF is wrong with me today?????

Hellie Sinclair said...

I know you have the first POTC because I think *I* sent it. I wasn't sure if you had the HP movies.

Australia is a great movie though...and Moulin Rouge. (I have that...I should watch that soon.)

I am not sure how this is going to work. If I finish this draft by end of Nov, that'll be the fastest I've ever written a rough draft. Three months.

I figure afterwards, I'll need a palate cleanse. I'll probably return to this "other guy" then, just for a change of routine and to mix things up, while I'm waiting for this story to vet inside my head and prepare to start a revision.

Hellie Sinclair said...

I am NOT suggesting write both. I'm just saying don't feel guilty you had a little fling with the contemporary. I like Terri's thing about a palette cleanse. I've heard where authors are getting close to the end of one book and they're writing scenes or ideas about another in a notebook. I just think you're doing this, but not in notebook form, see?

I'm definitely digging the idea of both an author sitter and a palate cleanser. I have 48 hours to write, starting at 7pm tonight. Carter is going to Grandma's house, Rob is going to a lacrosse tournament, and I will have SILENCE in my house.

So of course, I now have ideas for a new Western series. I need an author sitter for this weekend to keep me on my grueling revisions. I'm got every finger and toe crossed I can at least finish this first pass (major plot and character changes) this weekend. Then I'd only have smaller setting and language changes left.

THEN I can get all excited about a Western.

Terri Osburn said...

I'm amazed by those of you who can jump between contemp and historical. If I tried that my contemp characters would sound like they'd been plucked from an Austen novel and my historical characters would be driving Jeeps.

Marnee Bailey said...

There are things I love about both. Historical has such lush language and is so subtly witty. Contemps have that in your face, feels so familiar feel about them.

So fun to play with both.

*Snerk* I've got four ongoing WIPs, three originals and one fan fiction. Asking me for advice is like asking a drug addict how to step away from the big fluffy pile of coke.

The only Ryan Gosling movie I've even seen is Drive. He tends to star in movies that don't have enough explosions, guns, and violence to suit me. But if he showed up to author sit, he'd just spawn more plot bunnies. Most of my WIPs were partially inspired by some pretty man.

"...banana partridge orangutan goo" would be an awesome band name.

Oh, and what's POTC?

LOL! Would definitely be memorable!

POTC = Pirates of the Caribbean

D'oh. Should have easily figured that one out. My brain is banana partridge orangutan goo.

I'm going to say banana partridge orangutan goo the next time I feel the urge to curse in front of my children.

If we're talking Ryans - I'd prefer Ryan Reynolds. Hes funny and taller than me...just sayin...
