Kraken Friday!
Kraken Friday Yup, today, I pay tribute to the kraken.
Not just the kraken that lingers near the Revenge, feasting on our many inner critics, though that be a worthy mission and I know we all appreciate it a great deal. And he’s been working overtime lately, in fact, I’m a little worried he’s gonna get a bit fat and slow. I must remember to invite Nessie over to help him burn off some calories…
Yes, the stress of holidays and dealing with people I want to gently call idiots. (Yes, gently, because the other words I want to use are much more vulgar, so idiot is the gentle term.) I’ve been dangling at the edge of my rope lately and eyeing Sin’s ice picks…and of course, the bar.
Ah, the bar.
How much would I have to drink to put it all behind me and relax? Not a riddle. I mean, really. How much?
Anyway, the kraken has been by my side, or dangling above my head and settling his great slimy tentacles upon my shoulders in comfort.
(Anyone have any more slime removal solvent? I ran out partway through November…)
But the kraken has been good to me and in his own eight brained way, has offered up some words of advice…
When in doubt, toss the irritant overboard. He’s right, my life belongs to me and I’m in charge of who boards. The sea is full of challenges and let the irritant deal with them, not me. Or me deal with them.
It is possible to partition the brain and set things aside, even without eight tentacles. Yup, distraction can be my friend. One of my best distractions from the idiots of life is writing. Especially writing diabolical endings for said idiots.
Camouflage is your friend. (Not just the sexy underwear store downtown in Santa Cruz.) Yes, my ability to blend in and just slip under the radar is my friend. Not sure it’s the best advice for my current situation, but in the months to come it may very well become a paramount talent to work.
Now, to honor his greatness, I’m giving away a kraken ornament.
Showing his primary place in my world, atop it. Clutching it…one could say he’s riding it, others could say he’s holding it safe in an uncertain universe. Your choice. All the details are on my blog, but strangers may be boarding the Revenge today for a chance to enter. So be nice, crew!
And tell me, what lessons do you think the kraken has to teach you? Or me!

Well, with all his limbs, I think Kraky shows the fun and benefits of multitasking. *LOL* I mean, seeing things through one at a time is great and it's fun to scratch off the list, but it's also fun to spend an hour catching up on email, then an hour sewing, then an hour painting, then an afternoon cookie baking, and then an hour out with friends at Happy Hour. You're never bored with that many limbs. Keep a lot of irons in the fire--that's what I think Kraky says to me.
I think since the Kraken has been around forever, and seems to have plenty of years left in him, the lesson is that everything will work out somehow, over time, and we just have to learn how to get through the tough spots.
It's not a fun lesson though. LOL But sometimes when I'm having a rough day, I have to remind myself, "It's just one day". Even during the hardest times, the days gradually get easier, and more bearable, while we get tougher, and more resilient.
Hope it's getting better for you, Chance. :)
Hmmm.... lessons from the Kraken. How about that still waters can contain some interesting stuff. That it's important to plume the depths because if you do, you could unearth something marvelous.
Hope things are getting better too. :)
Hellion - Yes, on the multitasking stuff! I look around my house and recall people saying things like, "If you just put all your attention on one thing..."
And my response is, "If I just do what I can during a commercial break, work on this one little corner, than that stack, then the shoes over there..."
And I get a lot more done and feel better. As most problems, it's best attacked and harrassed on the edges, a little bit at a time!
Donna, good thoughts! He is an ancient beast and has a much difference perspective regarding time...what matters, what doesn't and what's next.
Marnee - Ah, to be jetting about the Caribbean depths, taking in the sights in the lowest depths... That would be loverlee! I was thinking the other day while editing my book of the heart, that I need to add some depth here and there... Good lesson!
Thanks for the well-wishing, things are going to improve. I'm just tired of the negative distcraction...time to push ahead! Things to do! Sewing! Housework! Writing! Grocery shopping!
For some reason, I thought it was Thursday. Where did Thursday go?? LOL! Now I have to go read this blog...
It has been one of those weeks, Terri!
This party is sucking the brain cells out of my head. And I didn't have many left to begin with. One more week and it's over. Then the prep for Christmas comes, but I'm not so worried about that.
I don't have an answer for the question at the moment, so I'm going to nod and agree with what has been said so far. But I'll come up with something! And I like to think the Kraken on the ornament is just giving us a great big hug.
I've been so excited to see your sewing projects on your blog Chance - so cute!
As for the Kracken, everyone has had amazing insight to share so far. My thought is that the Kraken knows those things and people to wrap his tentacles around for keeps and those things/people who just need to be tossed ashore.
I need to listen more to that advice - keep the people/things I hold dear close and toss aside anything that's just there to annoy, distract or stress me out.
Yep, Scape...that is his greatest strength. The discernment to know the difference. A lesson we all need to learn!
You say party and I hear those chanting little glasses in the Pier One commercial...though I know yours is a massive undertaking...
I had a company Christmas party I was going to...at the aquarium... *sob! But they cancelled it!
Come be my date. I invited a red-head (now silver) but she seems to be standing me up! LOL!
There's our pretty faced Scape! Took me about 35 years (maybe 37) to learn that lesson. Now I'm very careful who I let in my life and who I keep on the fringes.
I swear, if airfares weren't so insane, I'd take you up on that. Where is Ace when I need him!?
That was Deuce, dear.
*head hitting bar
Yeah, your brain is fried. Want to have a fried brain a-thon?
Well, who the hell was Ace?
What lessons do you think the kraken has to teach you? Or me!
I think the Kraken has been around “forever” because he has eight brains.
So the lesson that The Kraken teaches is ...
You need more than One brain to successfully navigate the treacherous waters of this world. Or any world for that matter.
How simple life would be if one could simply go out & get themselves another brain or two … But you can not. You can however surround yourself with wise friends and comforting compatriots. Put those heads & hearts together with yours and you will find , that even though traveling through those worlds is still dangerously tricky , charting a safer course through those rough waters is a bit easier.
And safer. At keast for your sanity it is, as you don't feel so alone and isolated on your voyage.
Lovely ornament by the way!
Ah, yer so poetic, Demi!
If'n ya don't have the brains yerself, gather them to ya. And not the zombie way...
And not the zombie way… So. Don't forget the Hearts. And lots of arms to hug you. Heck I'm begging to sound a bit like... well ...
"Put those heads & hearts together. And Arms. We need More ARMSSS!"
Makes me sound less poetic & more like ...well ...
Dr. Frankenstein I presume.
Sigh.
Reminds me, I watched Igor last week. Love that movie.
Still nothing to add.
Heck I’m Beginning! Not begging.
That's SINs thing.
And now that i've let loose with that comment I better go lose my self somewhere else. Like behind a locked door ... in another universe ... far far away ...
Igor was great!
Arms, a call to arms...a peaceful call to arms. Sounds fine to me!
A peaceful and Comforting call to arms.
I'd say " Ooooh we need a Group Hug!" but I'm pretty sure that i'd end up getting thrown over board ...
Ah, time to get the dog out. The wind has stopped, but is likely due back. One nice thing about the wind...no one worries about how their hair looks. Great excuse to just go out and not worry about it!
Sounds like you've had the kind of week I've had. Oy vey!
I'm a fan of suggestion number one. Toss the irritant overboard! If I could live out that fantasy, the sea would be awash in irritants.
What a lovely cephalopod ornament!
Yeah, tossing 'em overboard has the added benefit of a bit of violence to calm the nerves, plus he toys with them making it entertaining also!
Heck I’m Beginning! Not begging.
That’s SINs thing.
You swore you wouldn't tell anyone. I should've known.
When in doubt, toss the irritant overboard
Yup. Yup. I'm on board with that.
I met Santa today in a motorway service station and SHE was wearing fishnet stockings!
Oh where have my childhood illusions gone. Could Kracky restore them for me?
I would be very grateful .... really. LOL
Heck I’m Beginning! Not begging.
That’s SINs thing
Sin doesn't need to beg. She is awesome, especially for completing that NaNo thing. No Kraken can teach you to do that!
Well done Sin *deeply reverent bow*
Oh, and unless I'm mistaken--and I often am--you don't include a link to your blog. At least, not one that I can find. Might want to edit the post to add a link for those who want a pretty kraken on their tree.
I didn't? Sorry Pat!
Quantum! Well, that sounds like a modern Santa...I'll get Krakey on that right away!
Sin - Yeah, the tossing overboard seems a big favorite!
