Awraprawrimo
Influence this week: I found my missing Kiki flash drive!! And a new playlist for next month.
I've been working up a storm this month.
Yeah, the day job is chaos. No joke. When is it not? But also at home. Just like I prepared for National November Writing Month last November, I decided to embark on a similar journey for the month of April. It's affectionately being called, Awrapawrimo. The GPS made it up. I'm sure there is some April, Writing and Month in there. Much like the bruising pace of November, April will test the wills of even the hardest writers. I've set quite the goal for myself this year. One that won't be easily obtained and I will only get close if I manage to stick on track with my writing. I need to complete two books this year (the first and second book of my YA series) and by NaNo 2011, I will be ready to start my second book of Kiki's series. That gives me three months for each of the YA series, with a month in between to defrag my brain and breathe before November.
So just like how I prepare for November, I prepared myself for April. While I love and consume a number of paranormal and urban fantasy novels, I've never actually worked on one myself. I've never built a world or generated otherworldly beings. I live in my own little fantasy world where these creatures live and inhabit but never make their way to the light of day. My YA series is a paranormal, urban fantasy based series of a seventeen year old girl. At first, I wasn't convinced to write a YA book. I like YA books. I've read some pretty far out there YA books with lots of adult situations and language. But me? Write one? Um, on my best day my language is rated R and on my worst, I can make construction workers blush bright red.
But honestly, I'm tired of writing sex scenes. I truly am. Maybe when I find a set of characters that deserve it after they've earned the right in my story to have sex I'll start enjoying it again. I never thought I'd say this but I'm giving up the sex writing for the time being. YA is a good genre for me to get into and I think a good learning opportunity for me. To grow my own relationships, to watch my own characters grow and come to life. I'm looking forward to seeing through the eyes of a new character set even if the task at hand is a little daunting.
So is anyone willing to take on the crusade of Awrapawrimo with me? I made GPS pledge to do it. I made Hellie swear under penalty of walking the plank. But let's make it fun. While NaNo is stressful, how about we all set a lofty goal of words for next month and see how far we can get? You don't need to do 50k (I am. I've sworn a glittery blood oath with GPS) but something you want to aspire to next month. This is not the time to be stressed out. The whole fun of NaNo is quantity over quality. Use next month to edit. Or the next one after that, but let's get fired up. RWR and loyal friends, let's kick ass!
How many of you have participating in a writing challenge? What's the most words you've written in a single month?

OMG, I don't need a pin for that word, do I?
*snort!
Most words? Oh, back in the day when I was a newly broken dam...probably 100k.
Well, I'll do my best, Sinsister. I know I'm ready to dive into The Pirate Circus... While at RT and the muse is distracted, I'll do some (whisper) outlining...and see what I can get written!
I'm totally in on this. I NEED to get my ass in gear. I've been plotting, more in my head than on the page, but I really need to start putting the words down in April.
But I also need to be realistic about my number.
*checks calendar/does math/carries the one*
I'll commit to no less than 25 pages a week. That should get me up to or just over 100 pages by month end. Hopefully more. That's about the time I know the characters and the story enough to get to the good stuff.
I've done NaNo one time, but only wrote about 16K words during the month. Can't remember how many I wrote last spring when I sprinted through my first draft, but I think I was moving at a good clip. I need to get in that groove again.
Thanks for the inspiration and the awesome idea, Sin. I'm loving your ambition for the year. Have you looked at Christie Craig's (w/a CC Hunter) new YA series? First book came out yesterday but I read the prequal short story over the weekend. Might be a fast paced read that would give you some world building inspiration for April.
100k, in a month? Dude. *blinking* Your fingers were flying. I give up my title of bionic fingers to you. I've done 82k in a month. Never 100k. Holy hell. My hero.
Outlining such a nasty word. You know, I actually wrote up an outline for the first couple of chapters for the first YA book.
I know. Big shocker. I'm slightly unnerved by moving into uncharted territory for me and building a world and characters with special abilities. So it was a away to put my fears to bed and show myself that I have this story under wraps. I just need to calm down and write.
As anyone read any books where there are two coordinating or correlating series being published at the same time? I have some ideas but they are two separate series built within the same world.
I saw that Christie Craig had a YA series coming out when she was on the blog. I'll admit, I've not read a lot of YA. I have a few series' I'm dedicated to, but nothing like what I want to write. But I also can't read and write at the same time. In July, during my free month, I will probably buy it on the Kindle and devour it.
Sin, I have no doubt you can kick this writing in the ass. And I think it's awesome that you're trying new genres, and new challenges. It really is a great way to keep yourself inspired.
I am most likely in edit mode for the month of April. Christine has a couple things she wants me to work on, so I must devote myself to that.
I will try to throw in some occasional 1k1hr sprints, though, just to make sure I'm creating new stuff too. (Works BOTH sides of the brain. LOL)
As anyone read any books where there are two coordinating or correlating series being published at the same time? I have some ideas but they are two separate series built within the same world.
Sherrilyn Kenyon--she has the Darkhunters and the Dreamhunters and the Werehunters. Same world, but different rules on each of them.
And sometimes she mixes her Dark-hunter world with her historical world as Kinley McGregor. *LOL* (Which I'm not sure I recommend; it was totally Steven Spielberg and irksome.)
Donna - Hellie and I talked about doing those 1K1hr things in the evenings. It's one way to make sure we a) getting actual writing done and b) stop emailing for an hour. :)
I liked her Kinley McGregor books but I don't like her Sherrilyn Kenyon books at all.
I know. I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like them. But it's interesting she does it. Gives me hope. Same world, same rules, different rungs of the totem pole though.
DRD, I have no doubt that you'll kick editing ass next month. Because that's what pirates do.
Obviously I've missed out on the 1k1hr thing since I've not been around. If I get zoned in, I could probably handle that.
Terri, the 1k1hr thing is awesome. I do it all the time with Twitter folks, and it's amazing how it keeps me motivated. As you said, even an hour away from the internetz is productive. LOL
Sin, I'm stretching and flexing my ass-kicking muscles as we speak. :)
I'm a bit geared up, Sin, for our month.
Things I've Done to Prepare:
1.) I deleted all the games on my Facebook account. Now my only means of distraction are Terri's emails and following the Twitter account of the lost cobra
2.) Pre-writing a secondary character's (it's so weird to be calling this person a "secondary" character) agenda, in an effort to brainstorm scenes needed with A&E, think about the sort of themes and ideas I want to talk about in my story, and also to display my horrible lack of drawing skills as I draw "marriage as a house". You do not want me as your house architect.
Things Left To Do:
1.) Stock up on chocolate.
2.) Make my playlist.
3.) Return the books to the library--since clearly reading is probably off the list this month. At least mostly.
4.) Possibly pre-load pre-made blogs for the month of April so I don't have to freak out when I realize I haven't written anything for Monday.
5.) Write the pre-made blogs.
Hells, I'm returning all books to the library today. I even finished the only outstanding, unfinished JE fanfic left to my name this week. Goes to the beta today and hopefully posted by tomorrow. Just in the nick of time.
The cobra is lost in NY. You're safe.
*tsk* How can you not like those tortured Dark-hunters? I swear to you if I had Kyrian, Val, and Zarek in a room and I could pick only one, I couldn't do it--they're all incredibly hot. *LOL*
Okay, I lie.
It'd be Kyrian all the way.
Um, there is a lost cobra out running around.
*grabbing my charmer gear* I think I found my next favorite thing. Ice picks and lost cobras!
I must be the only person in the world who doesn't do the Twit thing.
Crap. I need to write my blogs for next month tonight. Holy sneakers, I forgot in my haste to finish Alpha.
Next month is gonna be a good month. I feel it. Mostly because if I'm motivated, I'll motivate people around me so I don't feel like I've been the only slacker lately. lol
Hells, everyone I know reads and loves the hunter books. Even GPS. But I've tried. I can't tolerate her voice. I dunno what's different between the Kinley and Sherrilyn books, but I swear, there is a difference and it irks me.
*fingers crossed behind back*
Dear DRD,
*grin* Anything for you.
Sincerely,
Evil Twin
I just retweeted Terri's tweet about committing to 25 pages/week. And it had a link to the ship, so Sin, put your ice picks away. . .at least for a little while so the visitors don't get scared.
I'd retweet--since I finally learned how--but I'm pretty sure Terri and I are followed by the same 40 people. Nothing I dislike more than repetitive messages. I'm sure I'm not the only one. *LOL*
I have no idea. I'm a weirdo. I freely admit it.
I don't know what the difference between Sherrilyn's voice between historicals and paranormals, except she's way more sarcastic in the paranormals. Esp the heroines. But I don't see how that would annoy you. *LOL*
I see Chanceroo and Bo'sun facebooked it as well.
Somehow, the thought of Hellie tweeting and me not is a disturbing thought. It's best if I keep my thoughts to myself.
Hellion, I know what you mean about the retweets. That's why I didn't bother to actually follow the cobra, because his tweets get retweeted by everyone. LOL They are wicked funny. But if he ends up with a book deal, I'm borrowing Sin's ice picks. LOL
I don't read Kenyon in any of her endeavors, but she's the sweetest lady in person. So it's not just you, Sin.
I love that the pirates are tweeting. LOL! And I have over 70 followers, thankyouverymuch. But I mostly just lurk over there, to tell the truth.
Donna - You're closer to the Cobra than the rest of us. Or would Marn be closer? Notice I used the Pirate Cobra image to promote the blog on facebook. LOL!
Terri, I'm not on FB so I can't see the cobra pic. And I think Marn is closer to the snake. However, the last time I was good at geography was in the 7th grade. LOL
Dear Evil Twin,
Thank you for putting your solemn vow into writing. I am printing this and having it laminated, and possibly placed on a plaque for my quarters. (The Hotties are looking for a new ship-improvement project to keep them busy. . .during the day.)
Just in case you attempt to recant.
Very truly yours,
DRD
hi there pirates! Sorry I'm been MIA - been down sick with bronchitis and it's been hell trying to get back in the swing of things.
The first year I did NaNo I managed about 15k which is my most ever in a month.
I'm hoping to kick off a big month for me coming up as well so maybe April is the time for all of us.
HEY! I'm not contagious online!
Why'd you all go running?
Scape, I'm actually working on some revisions. :) And throwing in an occasional tweet. Sorry to hear about your bronchitis. That takes such a long time to get over. Hope you're feeling better.
I don't think the cobra will try to go to Donna's house. It's supposed to snow there Friday. He'll probably go to Marn's.
Sin, don't worry. I think I've tweeted a glorious total of twice. About what I was eating.
Hope you're on the mend, Scape. The more the merrier with this April thing. (I would use the acronym but it scares me.)
That snow storm better not come this far south. I'm already irritated that we're in the low 40s and my fingers are freezing.
Scape, I'm pretty sure 15K is better than anything I've done in a month. *LOL*
I guess I'm supposed to commit to a number, aren't I? Ugh. I don't know. I don't think I want to do 50K because that feels so impossible to me. I feel like I'd be failing before I started.
Had a meeting with the DR. Which turned into a debate about wrestling. Don't ask.
I hope you're healing up nicely, Scapey.
I'm irritated with no spring. And irritated I have work to do today.
You could do half, 25k, Hells.
Dear DRD,
If the lost cobra gets a book dear, I'll give you an ice pick. Borrowing, not necessary.
Sincerely
Evil Twin
PS. I said anything for you. I didn't promise anything. Pirate code of conduct article 27.56.
Hellie, break it down into what you can do each day. Can you do at least one of the 1k1hr each day? One hour of writing. Shooting for 1k.
That's 30k in a month.
Awesome! That's a great commitment, Hells!
Hellie, break it down into what you can do each day. Can you do at least one of the 1k1hr each day? One hour of writing. Shooting for 1k.
That’s 30k in a month.
Oooh, I like that. Yes, I can commit to that. Thank you, Donna!!
Geez, I only committed to about 25K. Now I feel like a slacker.
We have a code????
I haven't actually committed to anything yet!
But if I must :) I'll commit to 10-15k in April. I'm giving myself a range becuase while I want the goal to be something I have to reach for, I have to take into consideration my normal writing habits. 10-15k is like 25K to someone else!
SIN, I haven't decided if I'm talking to you or not. Since, during our last encounter, you called me a pocket bu-uuuhhhh ... Umm what's with this Awrapawrimo-thingie? AwrapawrimoAwrapawrinoAwrapawino? Its about writing? Really? Now that you’ve embraced the YA voice within your writer’s soul, I figured that you were embracing the YA culture.
So
When I first read the word I thought that it was the name of a Girl Scout merit badge. A merit badge that the GS's earned by going around and handing out blankets to the local drunks. Yep, a blanket-handing-out-merit-badge thingie … aka
A-wrap-a-wino.
Terri, don't worry. The pirate code is written on an Etch-a-Sketch, which gets rebooted every night. Every day is a fresh start.
And Scape, I'm sorry to hear that you were unwell. But happy to hear that you are feeling better.
Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I woke up on Sat. feeling fine and then 2 hours later felt like death. Today is the first day I'm feeling slightly better and don't have a fever.
I haven't been sick like this in years and I hate it.
Jules, I always love starting out my day with a voice recording. I like this explanation of where the word comes from. Today could be one of those days where we come up with a definition of the word Awrapawrimo. Crap. Did I even spell it right?
Dear DRD,
Don't hate on the Etch-a-Sketch. I'll use it to write dirty things in the pirate bathroom about you. Because everyone knows what's written on the Etch-a-Sketch is word of law.
Sincerely,
Evil Twin
Dear Evil Twin,
I am not hating on the Etch-A-Sketch. I think it's the most appropriate method for writing a pirate code. However, I would definitely suggest you not use it for your WIP. It can be tricky to do revisions when there are no words to revise.
Very truly yours,
DRD
Dear DRD,
Don't worry. I use invisible ink for the WIP. Easier to fool everyone into paranoia that I'm writing about them. Especially if I look at them, laugh and start writing more.
Sincerely,
Evil Twin
Now trying to whittle my playlist from 4 hours to 1.5 (a CD's worth). Trying to pick songs that are actually meaningful for the story and not just ones I "like".
This etch-a-sketch thing explains that bruise across Donna's forehead every morning.
I need to print off the Ocracoke images (again). Thanks for the reminder.
Scape - Any commitment is a good commitment. Unless it's me doing the walk down the aisle kind of commitment, then not so much.
I'm ready to smack the weather with something. I just saw we're supposed to get 6-12 inches of snow Friday and Saturday. Sigh. Another April Fool's Day snowstorm -- just like when I moved out here.
I dislike snow after the first of March. Winter is being ridiculous this year. I'm ready to start running outside again.
Hellie, I spent a week on my new playlist. It had to be something I could listen to without being pulled into the music and humming along with it. It had to be meaningful to the storylines. And it had to have the right tempo. So difficult. Though, mine is still 4hrs long, but split into two separate lists. (A total of 8 hrs.)
Look at you getting all edity. LOL!
Here, Sin, I did a little revision on your first sentence:
I dislike snow.
The rest is just extra unnecessary wordage. :)
Huh, and I thought the ridiculous unnecessary wordage of Sin's post was where she mentioned she wanted to start running outside again.
I'm not willing to commit a week to this. *LOL* But admittedly I'm yanking songs from things I know I write well too but still fit the storyline; and then pulling a couple obvious theme songs that fit but aren't on any of my current playlists.
For instance, I thought Puddle of Mudd's song, "She Hates Me" probably fit my story. Had to locate it.
But I wanted to restrict it to 80 minutes since that's a CD--and if I have a copy I can play in my car as well as on my computer to make me think of the book. I imagine the playlist on my computer/writing will lengthen, but this CD will be good enough for putting me in the story if I want to brainstorm as I drive. See?
Bah to all your editing of my posts. I need fresh air to keep me from ice picking more people than necessary.
Hey, I like snow. In November, December and sometimes the first week of January. After that, it's senseless to have it.
The lead singer from Puddle of Mudd is from Kansas City. Nothing like seeing him sing that song and Blurry in concert. While I'm not a fan. There is something to be said about a song that says, "She f*cking hates me... lalalalala"
Hellie, I see the logic behind this editing of the playlist. I've done that as well, but it's just an abbreviation of my original playlist with songs that are fun to belt out while driving. And they are good fodder for the muse.
It's the only song of Puddle of Mudd's I listen to--so I can't say I'm a "fan", but I do love the "lalalalalalala" part too. *LOL*
The song reminds me of Offspring's Self-Esteem for some reason; and as I said, I prefer that song to Ugly Kid Joe's more abrasive one.
This one sounds confused--like "I know she hates my guts, but I can't quite figure out why. Huh." Like if he could figure it out, maybe they could work something out. But by the time you've sunk to the Ugly Kid Joe's version, just give them the divorce.
LOL, amen. Sometimes characters just need to break up to get back together.
Or the whole crowd singing, "Can you take it all away. Can you take it all away."
I think I have it recorded. I wonder if that's an experience akin to having someone quote your own book in your presence?
I love the whole first CD of Puddle of Mudd. In fact, I was trying to find it in my car the other day, but it may be easier to just buy a new one. The second one was so-so.
I love the "She Hates Me" song, but it's not really representative of them. LOL
Okay, I'm off to do more writing, and some chores. It's freakin' cold but at least the sun is out. I can pretend it's May. Even if I'm wrapped in forty-eleven layers of clothes.
I saw Puddle of Mudd in concert and some kid from the audience got up on stage with them to sing She Hates Me. Like, a little kid. Very odd thing to watch.
Don't they also have a song about loving how you smack my ass? LOL!
I didn't sleep in that late! Damn, it's hard being the only west coast pirate...
Give me that blasted etch-a-sketch! Who added this new drink? The Cobra 45! What the hell is in this? And will someone make me one? Or five?
You must have timed your wake up perfectly with everyone else's lunch hour. LOL!
I liked her Kinley McGregor books but I don’t like her Sherrilyn Kenyon books at all.
Not much of a fan of Kenyon's books, either. *Ducks.*
While I love and consume a number of paranormal and urban fantasy novels, I’ve never actually worked on one myself. I’ve never built a world or generated otherworldly beings.
World-building was a lot easier when I was younger and less critical of my own writing. I would just plow merrily ahead, making up stuff, not worrying whether it made much sense.
Currently, I'm buried by the world building for my steampunk WIP. Digging into old textbooks, researching climate, geology, mining, Sterling engines, etc. I really need to stop futzing and start writing.
Futzing is an artform. You can't rush art. *LOL*
Bo'sun, YES! They do. While I'm not a fan of Puddle of Mudd it's hard not to sing to those songs.
I think I might hug me a P. Kirby for siding with me and the few of us who don't care for Kenyon's books.
And I have to agree with you about being younger and it easier to build a world. For me, as I've gotten older I've just gotten more disillusioned which causes my imagination to dive into darker territories. Which is great for me, but not everyone's cup of imaginary tea.
I wrote a very short para/UF type thing for a retreat once, and loved that I could make my own rules. I had demons and an angel and a back alley and the angel cured the human after the demons hurt her.
That was seriously fun. Not fun enough for me to do it for a whole book, but still. LOL!
Chanceroo, the Cobra 45. When you figure it out. Gimme one or five too.
Yes, PofM very catchy. F-bombs and anger and psycho and ass smacking. We should book them for a Revenge cruise. LOL!
Cobra 45 makes me think of Colt 44. Is that a beer or a gun? I would google, but I'm too tired and lazy.
LOL, it's a beer. A cheap, cheap 20oz-er or 40.
Apparently all kinds of things are Colt. LOL
Aha! I was right. I've been watching too much Top Shot. LOL! (Hence the gun reference.)
Colt is a brand of gun though. And they have a .44. I just looked it up. lol
Wow, I'm late to the show (again). I'm packing since we leave on a plane to FL on Saturday to visit my sister and her new baby. (yay!)
But packing for two kids? Kill me now.
Anyway, this is awesomeness. Severe awesomeness. Go Sin, go everyone! I can't wait to see how you all are doing.
I'll get in on this, writing as much as I can. But it's got to wait until after my DH's birthday (the 12th). So I'll do a half month, I suppose. I'd like to revise the 12K I have and add another 10K or so by end of April. So, maybe I'll do that.
Anyway, I can't wait to see how you guys are doing. *Waves pom poms!* Go go go!!
What neck of the FLA woods are you going to be in Marnee? Anywhere near Orlando/Daytona Beach? That's Scapegoat country!
Yay! Whatever you can do, do it!
And I shudder at the thought of two little kids on an airplane. Good luck to you! lol
We're going to Jacksonville this time. Next year I think we'll venture to take the duo to Disney. But this year, we're just hanging with my family. (Both mom and sister moved to Jax five years ago). :)
Sin - I shudder too. That's probably not a good sign.
And I shudder at the thought of two little kids on an airplane. Good luck to you! lol
That's what dramamine or benedryl is for. Even if you can get just one of them to fall asleep, you're ahead of the game. *LOL*
For the mom. Not the kids. LOL
I thought that's what vodka was for.
Hey, who broke Twitter while I was gone? Yeesh. You can always tell when Mercury is in retrograde. . .
At least you won't get bored on the plane, Marn. And neither will the people around you. :)
My sister put half a shot of Jack Daniels in my little brother's bottle once when he was a baby. Which might have something to do with how he's turned out. Huh.
*innocent look* Wasn't me.
Great idea, Sin!
Count me in. I've got to finish the never ending regency. Part of my problem, is that I HATE the villainess. She's so totally opposite of everything I am, that she's hard to write.
Terri-loved the blog yesterday. Sorry I missed the conversation.
Di
Yay Di! Don't let this villainess get the best of you!
I'm blaming the cobra for the Twitter issues.
Heya, Di! No worries, you're here now. We're going to need to do updates throughout the month to see how everyone is doing.
I figured on my blogs next month, we can have a powwow on how we're doing and what we're struggling with. Sort of like a study session. LOL
Sounds like a plan.
And then I went to the eye doctor who blew my eyes up... Great day! Well, at least nothing is wrong with my eyes...
I think a Cobra 45 will be whatever is left on the bar after the end of the day, all thrown together... I do need to figure a good anti-Mercury Retrograde drink...
Pat - Futzing is an artform, Hel is right!
And I'm in, but want a pass for the week I'm at RT. I might write then, I might not...depends on a bazillion things... I might be inspired. I might be exhausted. I might be hungover a lot...
OOohh SIN, I forgot to tell you! I am participating in a writing challenge too. Can't tell you about it though ... as its very hush-hush. LOL
And
I DO have a big ol' mean snake in the grass cobra story. Can't tell it to you. But hey? Its the thought that counts right?
Chanceroo, you get a pass for RT week.
Jules, any time you participate in a challenge it's assumed it's hush-hush. lol
And please don't tell me about your big mean snake. I doubt your DH would appreciate you telling stories.
This one was 18 feet long with verha sharp fangs and an Tony Montana “What you lookin' at? You all a bunch of f**in' ***holes. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your F-bleep-in' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!” diva-boy.
...
Not my idea of romantic.
Seriously.
If the best a man can do is say “Better get outta his way!” instead of “Excuse me please.” the guy just isn’t dating material.
