What Will Tim Do to Johnny Next?

It all began with Edward…in 1990.

Progressed to another Ed. Wood this time…in 1994

On to another transformation, the deliciously intrepid Ichabod Crane…in 1999.

He gave Johnny new teeth with Willy Wonka…in 2005.

And made a cartoon out of him in the Corpse Bride…also in 2005.

Ah, the deliciously devious Sweeny Todd…leaving me to recite, when in doubt, What Would Sweeny Do? In 2007.

The child man of the Mad Hatter in 2010…

And coming up?

The new Barnabas?

What would you like to see Johnny try next? What literary character? You have a favorite Johnny role?

And sorry Q, nothing special for you today! No guest coming up this week, just we intrepid pirate writers and our brilliance! Stay tuned!

Edward Scissorhands broke my heart. I have it and I can't really watch it all the way to the end because it breaks my heart--which I'm sure is silly, but there you go.

I loved him as Icabod Crane--the sexiest Icabod that ever lived!!! And so passionate about science solving crime! It was so adorable. I really loved that movie.

I also liked him in From Hell, based off the graphic novel about Jack the Ripper. CREEPY movie. Bloody thing. I thought that was his bloodiest movie...and then there was Sweeney. *shudders* (Own it, still haven't seen it since I watched it in the theater. An odd choice to debut it on Christmas Eve!)

Johnny would make a good vampire. (I will always love him as Jack, but his role as Roux was particularly delicious in Chocolat.)

I prefer Johnny in costume dramas. (Neverland and Libertine both good, but both dark, I think. Blow was heartbreaking too, I thought. Of course, he's the inspiration for Lucy, so if he ever got the chance to play the devil...that'd be cool.)

I agree that I loved Ichabod. I also loved him in Sweeny Todd. I have the soundtrack and it makes for great listening on long trips. I can listen to it and see the movie action.

I just adore watching what Tim does to Johnny...and I've seen outtakes where it's clear that if he can mess Johnny up, smear green goo on him, or squirt blood on him...he will. And enjoy it.

What a great working relationship they must have!

And there was something oddly hypnotic in the role of Ed Wood...

Sigh. What a great way to start the day. LOL

I love him as Ichabod -- I've got the movie on DVD and have seen it tons of times. I just saw snippets of Sweeney Todd and what I saw was boring so I never finished it.

I can't wait to see what he does with Dark Shadows. I think it'll be fun -- hopefully sexy and not TOO campy.

I don't remember Neverland being dark -- I remember liking it. Mmm. And Chocolat. YUM.

Okay, now that you've gotten me all stirred up, I'm on my way to a "Redcoats and Rebels" thing today. Finally, a colonial re-enactment that doesn't start at the crack of dawn. LOL There's supposed to be a court-martial at 10:30, so I've got to get to moving so I don't miss it! LOL

He is a great actor. Tim Burton is a little out there for my liking and as he's in a lot of Burton's work, I sometimes have a hard time getting into the movies. But there's no doubt that Johnny immerses himself in his projects. :)

I have Alice in Wonderland on my Netflix queue. Looking forward to that. I haven't sent Avatar back though. I keep watching it and liking it more and more.

Great job on the blog, Chance! Love the format and the theme. I knew Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaborated often, but hadn't realized how much. I agree that Tim Burton is usually a bit too 'out there' for my taste, but with Johnny I can watch them. (Although, I really did like Tim Burton's animated Coraline.)

I think my favorite Johnny Depp movie is still Benny and Joon - maybe because I just watched it again. But I really did like Sleepy Hollow...and the Alice in Wonderland was strangely captivating. I'd have to watch again. It seems like these are usually all movies I can watch again and again and get something new.

Donna - Sweeny was boring?

I worry about you sometimes...but not everyon gets into musicals... I adored it. Such delicously wicked lyrics!

I have Neverland and the Libertine but haven't watched them yet. Just didn't happen!

Hope you enjoyed the court-martial!

Marnee - Whenever I hear Tim is going to do something I want to see it. I know he's going to twist it and twirl it and create something very, very different...

Especially when he takes Johnny and molds him into something strange.

I need to get Alice in Wonderland...I know there are things I missed that I will see a second or third time through. That's how Tim/Johnny movies generally are!

Melissa - Exactly! You can watch them multiple times and see new bits! What was the writing term used the other day? Layering?

Well, Tim/Johnny projects are like parfaits, lots of layers...

Chance, I love musicals, but for ome reason I couldn't get into Sweeney Todd. Granted, I was at a writers' conference, and my head was spinning with so many other things at the time.

I missed the court-martial this morning -- damn traffic! But I had a great time watching all the soldiers--I don't know how I kept from swooning at all those over-the-knee boots. LOL They had a battle re-enactment that was fun to watch, and I don't know how they managed in all that wool. It was humid today and I was dying in my linen top.

Okay, off for now!

I have a fascination with musicals. And I saw Angela Lansbury doing Sweeny Todd on television some years ago and found the entire story just so interesting!

I'd love to see Tim's take on Into the Woods, lord knows what he'd do with twisting already twisted fairy tales! So many roles for Johnny in that one!

I'd love to see Johnny play Edgar Allen Poe...

Sorry you missed the court martial!

Well, I probably would have felt sad for the poor fellow being court-martialed, or I would have tried to speak up for him. LOL So it's probably best I missed it.

I think I'm going to get a blog post out of the experience though, but just not right now. I'm tired from all that time travelling. LOL

I just realized I read this earlier today and forgot to comment. LOL! Man, that's the kind of day I'm having. I love Johnny Depp but I haven't seen most of the movies you all are mentioning. Loved him in Chocolat and he was the best part of Alice for me. That story totally didn't hold up the way they did it, but Johnny's performance was worth the ticket price.

No desire to watch Sweeney Todd even if I love musicals. Morbid musicals with gory murder in them is not my style. :) Afraid I'm in the "Tim is too twisted for me" group. Though I did like his version of Willy Wonka.

S'kay...just because some of us delight in the macabre...don't mean everyone gots ta.

When ya go back and really look at all the movies he's done, it will rally blow you away to see the depth and breath of roles he's taken on. But I don't think anyone challenges Johnny like Tim does.

Or messes him up. You know, trips him into puddles of gunk, etc.
