The One that Got Away
haha, I once wrote a short story with the same title. Only to have it parodied, which was even funnier.
Music of the week (It was a tough choice. I used my allowance to buy a bunch.)
"While the City Sleeps"- Digital Summer (Counting the Hours, 2010)
I went to see SATC2 with Hellie on Saturday. (You all are aware; I’m sure, since you read Hellie’s blog on Monday.) While Hellie wasn’t a fan of SATC the entire time it was on air, I was. I have this thing about forbidden relationships. Secret relationships. Complicated relationships. Anything you can’t have easily, I like. I like to be difficult. I like to play games. That’s just my personality.
SATC had plenty of that. Carrie wanted Big. Big didn’t want what Carrie wanted in life (I’m not even for sure Carrie knew what she wanted out of life) and kept a casual relationship with her. Carrie and Big were on and off. Carrie always wanted him regardless. Even when Aiden came along. The difference between Aiden and Big is beta vs. alpha. (One of my favorite topics of all time- but not where I’m going with this.) Carrie wanted to be wanted. Aiden was that guy. He wanted Carrie. He showered Carrie with everything a girl could ever want. Except Carrie isn’t that girl. Eventually, Big was the man she couldn’t attain; therefore, Aiden was just a way of wasting her time until she could get what she really wanted and for Big to realize she was what he wanted as well. But when *SPOILER* Carrie and Aiden see each other again for the first time in years, it feels like fate drew them together. And fate is not something you can ignore. When you are separated by years and spouses and finding yourself in a new identity, your old relationship becomes something you want but you can’t have. You either tempt fate by exploring it or you figure out your conscience is stronger willed than you thought. For Carrie and Aiden, fate was stronger than conscience. I say good for them.
We all want what we can’t have. There is this trigger in our brain that sees something that could be ours; we just have to find a way to make it happen. The instant you tell yourself you’re on a diet and can’t have a donut, then you start obsessing about what you can’t have. The one who got away is always going to be the one focal point you can reflect back on and wonder if you made the right choices, set on the right path. You’re never going to know. It is your forbidden, your secret and your complication in life.
I enjoy writing about those relationships. It’s now no secret that my heroine and hero are married. The heroine is my hero’s forbidden, secret and complication. He walked away from her. That doesn’t change that he still wants her. But she doesn’t want him. He wants what he can’t have and by her denying him of what he wants, he wants her even more. Just to prove to himself that he can have her and walk away again. My heroine is determined that while she still wants what she can’t have (this doesn’t included the hero on a silver platter with an apple stuck between his lips) he is not going to fool her again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, and you’re dead. (I love Kiki.) It’s easy to write these relationships. Life is full of them.
So tell me about some forbidden, secret and complicated relationships either in your writing or some that you’ve come across in your reading. What about wanting what you can’t have? Ever been there?

I've been in one (or am in one), whichever. I've written one. GOGU is the epitome of neurotic single girl forbidden, complicated love. And I've read it too.
So it's not that I can't appreciate the complicated forbidden factor, it's that I think Chris Noth looks like a douchebag. I like my men better looking if I'm going to break my heart over them.
Chris Noth is a good looking guy! What's the matter wit' you?
*ducking
What I want to know is how come I can never make this dynamic work for me in a positive way? Like DRD's HOA...why can't my forbidden fruit be a daily exercise routine? Or a clean house? Eating green vegies?
Let alone some hot sex with someone interesting.
As for writing? Hmmmm. I think at one time or another, I let my characters run wild and get whatever they want, eventually...
*snicker
Not good looking enough for me. So you can have at him.
*snorts* Why would anyone's forbidden fruit be an exercise routine (that's not sex), housecleaning or veggies? (Unless you're the Devil...you know for him, I could see it: it would ruin his reputation AND he must be bored with all the sin after a while. Veggies would be a change of pace.)
I guess I better go to bed if I'm going on vacation tomorrow. Boy am I sad? Like a kid at Christmas.
I probably won't get to talk to you guys until Sunday--*pouts*--so have fun!
LOL -- forbidden fruit is a HEALTH food! Yes!
Hellie, have a great vacation. Hope there's lots of Hotties and forbidden fruit for you to partake of!
Intriguing topic, Sin. Not that you can tempt me to spill any of MY secrets. LOL (Saving those for the memoirs!)
And I think I love Kiki too -- that's a great motto she has. LOL
Twilight. Love or hate the series (I like most of it), it's definitely a well-arranged forbidden romance plot. All that, if I get to close to her I could kill her, stuff. I just read the partial draft of Midnight Sun again this week and it's particularly angsty from Edward's POV.
In my writing? I haven't really tackled this a lot yet. My current story has a little of this, because she's so below my hero socially. But that's about it.
I go on record as loving Kiki too. :)
I always seem to be wanting something I can't have. Right now, it's a house. I'm qualified for an amount of money that would be obscenely high in my home town. Here, it gets me a piece of shit house in a bad neighborhood. And it's pissing me off.
I guess I have a bit of this in my MS. Nate was the popular jock in high school and Emma was a shy bookworm wallflower. She loved him from afar believing him out of her league and he thought she was cute but figured smart girls like her would never date a jock.
Of course, once they're adults, they manage to get on the same page. But now Emma is the "thing he can't have" to the villain, which causes all sorts of problems.
I'm going to do my best to keep up today. I'm leaving on vacay tomorrow and my car had decided it no longer wants to run and my door handle snapped off. I think it's God's way of telling me I vacay too much.
I have to agree with Hells. While I like Chris Noth, I don't particularly find him attractive. I like the sparkle in his eye when he's doing something wicked. I like his charm. Not down with doing him. Just my personal preference.
Chance, you saying you let your characters run around and act wild every once in a while is an understatement. Your regular is our wild. lol
Ter, sorry about the house-hunt. I can completely relate about the differences in affordability. When DH and I were looking five years ago, I thought it was crazy that we bought a house about the same size as my parents but paid over twice as much as they sold theirs for that same year. Insane.
I think it’s God’s way of telling me I vacay too much.
Yeesh, I can't imagine the violence if you DIDN'T vacay this much. :) Sorry your car has a bad attitude though.
Kiki says nothing is forbidden. You just gotta reach out a take it.
I'm with DRD. If the forbidden fruit is a part of my daily health routine, I'm all in. The more you tell me you're not going to spill the more I'm going to amp up your stories. I mean, it's one thing to hang them over my head and dangle them about *grin*, it's another thing to let me make up my own for you.
And thank you *I think Kiki is pretty great* but Kiki says she doesn't want any love, lol.
Stupid ***$*#%**** car. I've been meaning to trade it in for like a year. I'm just one of those people who drive s#!t until it falls apart on the road. lol
Dear Evil Twin,
Thank you for giving me advance warning about YOU writing the juicy bits of my memoirs. I now have plenty of time to start composing my denials and retractions. Unless, of course, your version of my memoirs increases my popularity. . .in that case, I thank you in advance.
Most sincerely yours,
DRD
P.S. Please let me know if you need a list of potential souvenirs to bring me back from your vacay.
Marn, I have to agree about Twilight and the forbidden. While it's not completely forbidden to have a relationship with a mortal, the dangers still lurk there for complete chaos. Stephanie Plum is another series with complex relationships. Ranger and Steph could be together but that would mean the both of them admitting what they want and fighting for it and they won't- complicated relationship.
Marn, do you find it harder to write the forbidden, secret, complicated relationship in contemps or historicals?
Ter, I'm gonna do something that only happens once a year...
*hug*
*jump away*
I'm sorry babe about the housing situation. It's amazing that even now after the market has flopped there are still outrageous pricing on areas. Had the market not flopped as it did, we would've never ended up in our house now. Something will happen to help you out. It has to.
I love reversals in fiction. Where you know when they were younger they knew one another but someone wasn't willing or even notice the other person. Then they meet again and they are reminded they are an idiot and have to figure out a way to make amends.
Aaaawwww, Sin hugged me. I'm going to cherish that forever.
Since we are only a few miles from the ocean (apparently, that's an in demand thing - whatever - I hate sand) and we have this ginormous military population who always need somewhere to live, prices here haven't dropped as drastically as they have in other places. I know it's location location location, but your house is not fucking worth more than I'll earn in my lifetime. I'm sorry.
Anywho - to get back on topic. Well, I got nothing. LOL! Sorry, brain is fried!
Dear Evil Twin,
Never mind about the memoirs--or the souvenirs, come to think of it. In fact, try to put me out of your mind, completely. Forever.
Sincerely,
DRD
LOL, it's Wednesday. Did we really expect to stay on topic for very long?
Dear Evil Twin,
Your recent note just described the epilogue I had penned for my own version of my memoirs. Perhaps I was a bit hasty suggesting you drop off the face of the earth. (Pardon that last sentence -- I plan to fix it during revisions.)
Truly yours,
DRD
Bo'sun, that IS tough about the housing situation. But hey -- you got a hug out of Sin. That sounds money in the bank right there! Not that you can use it for a down payment I guess. . .
Wouldn't that be awesome? I could call up my mortgage lady (who is awesome, btw) and say "My friend who never hugs anyone gave me a virtual hug. That should get me qualified higher, right?"
WTH is an underwear present? LOL! Does that mean his package? Because I've never heard it put quite that way. LOL!
An underwear present- a package, yes, but a reason to make you smile, not a regular package that could be disappointing.
You can tell her if we were closer I might actually hug you. And that in itself is a miracle.
*sigh* I hate disappointing packages. Such a waste.
This gives me hope something will turn my way. Thanks for perking me up. LOL!
BTW - I ordered a bunch of stuff from ELF. Can't wait to get it. Far as I know, hasn't shipped yet. Does that always take a while?
Sin -- LOL -- an Underwear Present -- can't wait to see what your Christmas gifts are like!
Terri, I'm guessing you can get that mansion now! (Make sure it has a coffee maker -- I'll be right over. LOL)
Ter, the shipping sometimes takes a minute. At Christmas, it's the worst. I've had to wait a week for it to ship. Usually it's a couple of days before they ship it out. And I think they are on your side of the coast so once it ships out, it shouldn't take long for you to get it.
You know, Donna, if you were to relocate down here (the land of the Navy SEAL!) we could go in together and get an awesome place not far from the beach. Seriously, how could you pass this up?
You'd even get to live with a pre-teen. If that doesn't seal (heh) the deal, I don't know what does.
I'm tempted to move there just because you said the words, Navy SEAL.
I hate disappointing packages as well. Therefore, I have invented the underwear present and any cabana boy wanting to fluff my pillows has to qualify. I like to peek at my presents before I'm allowed to open.
They're everywhere, Sin. I need to go out more.
Sin - Peeking is allowed, just don't forget to wrap it back up before you use it. ;)
Bo'sun -- SO tempted. LOL And a pre-teen that I can spoil and give bad advice, oops, I mean, memoir fodder? Mmmmm.
I agree with the "pre-qualification process" for the packages -- heck, if you have to do it for a house loan, you should have to do it for something REALLY important! LOL
Sin -- you would scare the crap outta those fearless Navy SEALS. I'd have to spend all my time consoling and comforting. . .oh wait.
Williamsburg is close by and I bet it's very similar to Boston. LOL! Really, think about it!
I'm just gonna let it flop around in the air.
I love that you're giving me safe sex talk, Ter. LOL
I think me and some Navy SEALs could have some fun. And after I wear them out, you're more than welcome to them dear.
LOL! Someone has to be the responsible party on this vessel. Not that I'm taking responsibility for all that takes place, I'm not insane. But safety first!
I suppose along with their presents they should have to present their papers of authenticity and clean bill of health. I can handle the rest.
Every hottie passes a strenuous and thorough physical before being pressed into service. No worries there.
Terri, I've always wanted to go to Williamsburg. . .You're making this quite tempting. *fingers in ears* Lalalala.
OMG, Sin, like there would be anything LEFT after you're done with them. Instead of papers of authenticity and a clean bill of health, they should just be asked, "Do you have a death wish?" LOL
I wanna come there too.
*hahaha*
I mean, I want to travel there to Williamsburg as well. I was quite jealous when Hellie went.
"they should just be asked, “Do you have a death wish?”
SHHHHHHH! You're scaring off my potential vict- I mean presents.
These are the best of the best, Donna, don't sell them short.
Williamsburg is a mere 45 minute drive up the interstate. Outlet shopping and the birthplace of the American Revolution. You can even ride in a period carriage and wave to envious onlookers. (Kiddo and I do this twice a year.) Don't get me started on the chocolate shop.
These are the best of the best, Donna, don’t sell them short.
Did you say SHORT? LOL That may be their only protection when it comes to Evil Twin's Evil plan.
LOL, Sin -- you definitely have to stay away from them. Our nation's military preparedness depends on it.
You're welcome to come too, Sin, but the Undead Monkey is part of your deal and I'm not sure Donna or I (and definitely not the pre-teen in the equation) is quite prepared for that. LOL!
But you can visit anytime!
LOL -- Bo'sun and Butthead
Isn't it sad when we become the romance writer versions of Beevis & Butthead? LOL!
She said short. Har..haharhar
The gorgeous weather outside is tempting me to leave. . .I noticed the other day the people across the street have a porch swing. Wonder if they'll notice/mind if I hang out there today? LOL
Considering they just hung it out there for all to see, they're just asking for some company.
Wonder if I can get them to make lunch too? LOL
That's what I think!
I thought writing the forbidden was more complicated in contemp. I had to add the paranormal aspect to get it. Because really, in our society, there isn't much that is forbidden. We do what we want with who we want. Personally, it feels like the forbidden things are forbidden only because of personal hang ups. In historicals, a person does something forbidden and it means personal ruin.
Navy Seals... Ahhhh....
I like this answer Marn. I was thinking to myself it would be easier (well not easier, but easier to come up with ideas on the forbidden, secret and complicated) in historicals because of the factors that kept people apart. Now, in our generations, nothing is forbidden.
Do you think they have some mint tea bags? I want some hot tea with my lunch.
DRD, I'll sneak out to the porch swing with you. When I grin- all sweet and innocent mind you- I'm sure they will understand that we need some quiet porch swing time. And make us a very nice lunch as well.
I admit, it's harder to find forbidden aspects with serious consequences in contempts, but they're still there. In my next WIP, the hero is falling for his brother's fiance. Very forbidden. Not shunned from society and lose everything bad, but pretty bad. :)
ITA that the contemp stuff is more internal forbidden and the historical is breaking the mores of society kind of stuff. But I'm an internal issues kind of girl, so I go for that. LOL!
Leave it to Marn to get us back on track. What would we do without her?
Marn, you're absolutely right about the forbidden nowadays -- "personal ruin" in this time period just means the time before they go into rehab and start their "personal comeback". LOL
Sin, I would LOVE to see you work your magic. Although it's too hot here to have hot tea. I'm gonna ask them to make iced tea.
Leave it to Marn to get us back on track. What would we do without her?
She's got the compass, right? :)
Yowza, Ter. Are they going to end up together or is she gonna ditch both?
We have a compass?
Lemme ask. Knowing you and where you're currently living you will forget them to add the sugar.
Maybe she's gonna HAVE both! :)
Sugar, in tea. *gagging*
You don't put sugar in your tea? What kind of communist are you?!
Of course we have a compass. Not that we use it much...
They end up together. Should be interesting trying to make that work. LOL!
When Tiff came down here from Canada and kept asking for hot tea everywhere, they kept bringing her iced tea. You'd think they never heard of hot tea. I just had a cup this morning!
Donna - We're looking at a high of 96 today with heat indexes in the hundreds. How it is up there?
And I vote for both of them, and maybe add in another guy. Just to show the other two how it is done.
It's very pleasant right now -- 79 degrees, with a high of 88 -- but relatively low humidity, at least until the evening. LOL That's when the humidity finally gets out of bed to do its job!
But I'm guessing with the temps you have there, Terri, there's a LOT of nekkid SEAL mens walking around. *faints*
I don't like sugar in my iced tea, just in my hot tea.
Seriously, Yankees are weird.
Sugar, in tea. *gagging*
I've not heard that kind of gagging from you in a long time.
Sin -- LOL -- you are too much. And I mean that in a good way.
Sorry, can't write multiples. It's hard enough to keep two people entertained with each other.
The brother isn't necessarily a jerk, but he's not someone the reader is going to feel too sorry for either.
Haven't seen any nekkid yet, but there is the occassional jogger without a shirt. I wish the humidity would wait until evening to rear its ugly head. The other day when I got in my car to leave work, the temp inside was 114 degrees. Gah!
I have a hard time keeping track of one person, let alone multiples.
This new sunscreen I got for my face - the saleslady said it wouldn't leave "that chalky look". Well, I know I'm fair skin already, but with this on, I could be part of the Cullen family in the next Twilight movie. Yeesh.
Dear Evil Twin,
I'll say. I feel like a ballerina.
Very truly yours,
DRD
I don't need sunscreen to be a part of the family. Sheet paper is darker than me.
That black toe shoes are really you.
You're going to sparkle when you go outside. LOL!
I didn't think about the sparkling. LOL Hope everyone has their sunglasses ready!
I'm pale too, but if I don't wear sunscreen, my face glows like Rudolph's nose.
And gimme back my black sparkle ballerina shoes. I've been looking EVERYWHERE for them you amazon filching brat.
LMAO. I had no idea. And I think we've had 7 comments on topic.
I really think there is a possibility we've been separated by birth DRD.
We're pushing 90 comments and maybe five of them are on topic. LOL! This has to be some kind of record.
That's easy enough to fix -- just change the topic! LOL
I'm heading out for a bit, so that ought to keep the numbers down!
Dear Evil Twin,
I hesitate to say "You're wrong" about the ballerina thing, but only because I need time to duck before you shoot something at me. I only mean to say there are no Amazon ballerinas of which I am aware.
Here are your black sparkle shoes. I prefer the red ones (and so do the Navy SEALS -- they like the red, white and blue combo, the white being my skin, and the blue being my eyes.)
Kisses,
DRD
And I'm getting ready to go home for a spell as long as the car stays in tact for the duration. The DR is out of the office this week so I've kept lazy hours. lol
Great, now I'm just talking to myself. At least until Chance gets here.
Okay, then I'm hijacking. In order to make this brother steels other brother's girl thing work, how much of a jerk does the jilted brother have to be for you? Can he be a good guy but clearly not the guy for her? Or does he have to be a real ass. Right now, I'm running with the "he's sort of a jerk in that he's not the guy for her and is too wrapped up in himself to really see her."
Dear DRD,
You evil minx! I will get you my pretty. And your little troop of Navy SEALs too.
Sincerely,
Evil Twin
I'm still here. I had to go outside and see what all the digging was next door -- LOL -- and the damn humidity took all the curl out of my hair that I just put in. Grrr.
I'm pondering your question, Terri. The jilted brother -- he's asked your heroine to marry him? Or do I have this backwards?
Little set up.
Little brother brings home his fiance to meet the family, plan to stay for two weeks. Little brother gets called back to the city to handle a case (he's a lawyer). Leaves big brother to show fiance around. Sparks ensue. It's very clear that big bro is the man for her and not little bro.
Basically, little brother is a bulldozer of sorts and caught up in himself. Doesn't really see the real herione. Big brother sees her right away, less of a bulldozer. Pushes her to think for herself and stop living to make everyone else happy at her own expense.
Does little brother have to be a jerk for you to go with this? It's sort of the Sweet Home Alabama thing where neither is really a bad guy. But little brother will not be a guy the reader falls for, I don't think.
I don't think little brother has to be a jerk -- and if he was, it would make things too easy, right? :) I think he can put his job first, and probably himself first -- things that aren't bad to do, but they mean the heroine isn't as important to him as she should be.
It kind of makes me think of Dan in Real Life too. You just ache for Dan, because he wants her so much, but he won't do the wrong thing, so you admire him for that.
That's what I thought, I don't want to take the easy way out. And that movie is serious inspiration for this story. Joe (hero) is driving up the Outer Banks when he sees a woman (heroine) on the side of the road with a flat tire. He stops to help here, there's chemistry and attraction. She doesn't tell him more than her first name and where she's headed, which is his island.
He buys her coffee while they wait for someone to come fix the tire (spare is flat too) so it's a good sized opening. And it's all in his POV, so the reader won't know she's his brother's fiance until Joe finds out. (Of course, I just gave it all way...lol).
Also, indication that the little bro is selfish in that he makes her drive down on her own becaused of some selfish reason.
It sounds great! (And don't worry, my memory is crap nowadays, so I'll forget all that by the time I read it -- even if I read it tomorrow! LOL)
And you've got some of that FORBIDDEN aspect in there too. Nice!
I think you're going about it the right way -- making the little bro less appealing because of his characteristics -- and he's gonna seem less appealing in comparison to Joe. It's gonna rock. :)
Thanks! I figure it's walking a fine line, making sure the reader doesn't hold steeling his brother's girl against him. LOL! But Joe is such a good guy and he'll try to resist really hard. He even tries to do the right thing. The poor guy doesn't stand a chance.
Hey, don't let big bro be non-redeemable (yes, make him recyclable) and spin a third book for him.
Sorry, I'm late and the ship is bouncing about. Wish I had more wit to sprinkly about but lately, I am witless.
I'm still thinking of running away to join the pirate circus.
Well, I have to go out for a bit -- otherwise I put on mascara for NOTHING. LOL
Nice to see you, Chance, although now we're like two pirate ships passing in the night. . . :)
I'll be back later to hear more about this pirate circus. Oh, and I agree about recycling the little bro for another book -- I LOVE seeing those kinds of characters redeem themselves!
Chance - I've thought of that. I wonder if readers would want his story. He'd have to do some serious growing up. Usually, characters eventually introduce me to their hero or heroine, so we'll see if he finds the right girl for him out there in the ether and convinces her to be in a book. :)
Yeah, I've got the compass. Not that you wenches allow me to use it a lot. I was threatened with the Kraken and being tossed over with the monkey. Someone even said they might keep the hotties away. I keep the compass to myself thankyouverymuch.
No! Marnee! I love the compass! If I brought up the kraken at any point, it's because of the pirate circus...it just calls to me right now!
I'm very distracted.
Oh, look! a butterfly!
I'd love to be drifting away on that porch swing, drinking and iced tea (sweetened!) and watching the butterflies. Doesn't that sound lovely?
First thing I would like to point out is that you ladies went way off topic before I stopped by - so I can't be the scapegoat today! :) Or hey, maybe I can!
Bo'Sun - I think little bro should not be a jerk - agree you should set him up for his own book. Maybe think up a past for him that would make work so much more important than a woman and then twist that into his story. Give him a good reason in his own book why it would take "the one" to take him away from work.
Thanks, Scape. He will come across as a bit of a jerk, as he is one right now. But a jerk to the point of being still redeemable. I just don't want to have to make him the antagonist in the whole thing. That would suck and who would believe the HEA considering they aren't going to stop being brothers? They all have to find a way to live with each other at the end.
Family?
*having hysterics on the yardarm
Live with each other at the end? Hell, why not have them eat each other alive...
Nevermind.
*slapping self, better now
Bo'sun, you can do it. Don't make him a total jerk, just a mostly total jerk with some good things that will be brought alive in the third book by the right woman.
Wait! Sin and Hellion are going off on vacations at the same time? Did I read that right?
Has anyone warned homeland security?
And we're going on opposite sides of the country. Me to the west coast and Hells to the east. Truly, everyone is shit out of luck. The world will end.
No, but I heard ATF may following me. You know how those picky bastards are about rules and what not.
Scape, always nice to see you m'dear. Join in the melee of going WAY off topic. It is what Wednesday's are known for.
Way off Wednesday. That has a nice ring to it.
DRD is the only one who can save Wednesdays and I have designs on corrupting her more than she already is.

Hahahaha! It's gonna be fun to watch you do that! Hey, maybe we should get a photographer, to document it. LOL
*still cackling about contacting H0meland SecurIty*
Man, the HOA just took hold something fierce. Instead of getting home from work and going back to revisions, I just mopped the kitchen floor. For maybe the third time since I've lived here. (Don't ask how long I've lived here!)
Wow, Terri -- sounds like it DID grab onto you. I'm kinda jealous actually. :) My HOA involves finishing a book I'm reading that I like a lot. I did move some stuff from the living room to the spare room this morning though. . .yeah, I'm counting that as housework. LOL
What does that mean? mopped the kitchen floor?
