99 Bottles of Rum on the wall...
*shrug* I couldn't think of a blog title. I've hit the special rum a little too hard. MM, take it away before someone gets hurt.
Yeah. *laughing* Right. I went rogue on this ship a long time ago.
I don't admit to "feelings" and whatever kind of crap you're trying to sell me as general female emotion. *crossing arms over chest* At least not in my outside voice.
*eye roll* And I sure as hell don't cry. I'd rather die than be caught crying.
You may think, why this little rant?
I spent the weekend with Kiki and Dex. Always an adventure into repression and denial. I can admit while we're not supposed to write heroines like ourselves, Kiki has a lot of my emotional characteristics. And writing a character that reminds you a lot of yourself in a way is, well, annoying and trying and very challenging to make it seem original. This is where Kiki's opposite comes into play. The Yang to her Yin. In times when I'm so annoyed with Kiki that I can't stand it, I just insert my annoyance into Dex's lines and everything is kosher.
Terri spoke a little on having a motto for your characters to help compass your character's motivation and I've always known that Kiki's "motto" is- I don't deserve it. Sacrifice is the only way. Whereas, Dex's "motto" is- I take what's mine and damn the consequences.
I like Dex. He's motto makes me grin in the most wicked way.
Now (and you might want to get a feather bed for Terri to pass out on) I'm about to admit something that I definitely don't associate with most of my heroes.

Kiki is a true alpha heroine. She stiff-arms emotion like a pro. You can't find a crack in her emotional guard armor. You can't find a way to get to her through others because she doesn't allow anyone close enough. You think you know her, but you don't- you know what she wants you to know. She is a rough and tumble girl. Paring her up with another alpha would only weaken her stance as lead alpha of her pack (not to mention probably WWIII). And I can't have that.
Dex and Kiki have always been paired in another series that I planned before the Sadie series. Kiki was the pretty unattainable girl Dex secretly loved from afar. Dex is the man that Kiki secretly loves but she could never forgive herself if she hurt him and she knows she will. She knows her emotional detachment from life would eventually kill the man she loves from afar. So she keeps him at a distance and (in my mind) he's been quietly grooming her slowly but surely to let him in.
Sneakiness, I can admire. I can respect that. You can ask Mattycakes. He said he tried all sorts of things to get my attention but the only way he got to me was by sneakiness (I can't resist a good head game. *pause* Wait... I didn't mean it like that.). I was damned sure I wasn't going to fall for him. In fact, I was going to move away from him to prove it to myself that I didn't need anyone.
By the time I realized how far I'd fallen, it was too late to run and I didn't want to. Once you get a taste of something in your life you've been starving for and didn't realize it, it's hard to let it go. I want Kiki to have this same realization to complete her character arc. It won't happen in one book, mind you; but the gradual acceptance of the little things that Dex does for her will eventually make her realize that while she's been looking at the big picture and trying to keep him out of it, he's already woven himself so deep into her life, she can't live without him.
I've always been at the realization that two alphas aren't made for each other. You don't have to be an alpha to dominate an alpha female. You just have to show her a lot of respect. Get underneath her skin and make her think about you and the possibilities. And an alpha females needs someone in her life to soften her, otherwise she eventually gets so far detached she can't come back. If the hero is so unyielding in his own emotions, how can you soften the pair of them together if you can't show them that it's okay to admit to a few feelings and have the need of someone in your life that you can count on? The story would get stagnant and stale if you had to read about them constantly butting heads over something. There has to be push and pull to keep interest and growth.
What characteristics do you look for in an alpha female versus the beta female? What are some pros and cons of each that you find irk (or admire) while you're reading? Any favorite alpha females out there in TV or Fiction? How about great alpha females and their men- any examples?

Long as the alpha female don't act like a male...I'm cool wit' 'em. They can wise crack (always like that), they can kick butt (right on!), they can rescue the hero (I love that! Love, love, LOVE THAT!)...long as they don't sound like a man.
I like Temperance on Bones. She be alpha. Sully be alpha... But it works because they complement each other.
I haven't written an alpha female, but mainly because I'm *so* beta. I mean seriously, I'm the biggest push-over in the world. It's sad.
But I gotta say, I did that where I wrote a heroine like me, and I hated her. I kept trying to kill her off *g* (I don't even want to know what that says about me).
I was going to say Bones too, for an Alpha female. And Booth is alpha in a sensitive sort of way (or maybe he's gamma)so I agree that it works.
But this leads to an interesting question. Can you be alpha and be "in touch" with your emotions? I'd always thought of alpha characters as someone who didn't let their emotions rule their actions, not necessarily someone who wouldn't feel or express emotion. Hmm, that made no sense. I need more coffee :)
I'm early! Yes, I arrived at work nearly an HOUR before my usual time. No idea how that happened. (Though it had something to do with a cat determined to wake me up early. Grrrrr.....)
Chance - You are too funny. Since you've been my therapist and help me realize Celi is me, just skinnier, I'll let you and Sin fight that one out.
Hal - This is where the "What is an alpha anyway?" debate comes up. I don't think being alpha has anything to do with emotions. (And I'm pretty sure Janga will back me up on this one.) Alpha means leader. It means others have a natural tendency to follow. An alpha is good under pressure, smart, in charge. But keeping your head in moments of crisis doesn't mean you don't have emotions.
There are times that an alpha shows their power, lets others know he/she is in charge. But again, this has nothing to do with not having feelings or emotions. In fact, I'd venture to say an alpha feels very strongly for those he/she leads.
Forgot to say, I think this is the most times my name has ever appeared in a blog. LOL! You're thinking about things. My job here is done. *G*
I think several female characters on television are alphas these days. Bones, as mentioned, but also Kyra Sedgewick's character on The Closer, Holly Hunter's in Saving Grace (though that character is a hot mess), and Arquette on Medium. The irony is, I don't watch any of these shows. :)
Oh, Kate on Castle is an alpha and I do watch that one. But I watch it for Castle (Nathon Fillion *sigh*) and he's a total beta. LOL!
Sin, I love this blog. And I would never ever conceive to make you into anything like a plotter.
Though I'm a bit of a beta myself at times, so maybe I'm trying to infiltrate a little at a time. You have to watch betas sometimes, you know.
But seriously, your thoughts at the end about how a hero has to deal with an alpha female really got me started thinking about Ice and Marc's story. Because Ice is hard core alpha. But I think Marc's gamma enough for her. Sorta southern boy rough on the outside, sweet and gooshy on the inside.
My favorite alpha in fiction right now is Xhex, from JR Wards stuff. (I really love Ward these days.)
Ohh, I love the idea of Marc being a little squishy on the inside to balance out Ice. She's definitely an alpha female who needs softening. Why do I have a feeling that Kiki and Ice are a lot alike? *g*

I think Ice might be tougher than Kiki. Kiki's world is pretty much crumbling all around her and she's one of those people who keeps trying to patch it.
I think Cin and Ice might be closer in alphaness. Ice is still f*cking hardcore. I adore her.
I love Xhex too. I have a bit of a girl crush on her. And Baby Bang in Tara Janzen's crazy series. Baby Bang is hot and drives a hella nice ride.
I would love to say that Ivy from Kim Harrison's books is alpha, but as much as Ivy just takes control, she still allows others to dominate her.
I actually watched some of Castle the other night, Ter, and I found that I enjoyed it. Kate is really alpha.

Okay, and while I agree that not necessarily Alpha has anything to do with "emotions" as much as being able to lead, you don't find many people who can lead a group who are sensitive and really in touch with their feelings. In my personal opinion, alpha's are super in touch with their "emotions" because they know how to control it, push it down, compartmentalize them. You can't do that if you don't know what it is.
I'm finding that writing two first person POV heroines takes a lot of thought to weave the stories together and make it work. It's not like I didn't think I was gonna have to put some thought into it. I mean, that's what all those short stories are about really.
Okay, I can't remember the definition of a gamma. I know it's the inbetween of an alpha and a beta. I think Dex is between an alpha and a gamma. An alphma? A gampha? *laughing*

My definition of an alpha is a bit like yours. I always assumed that an alpha was a character who didn't let their emotions rule their actions. But it changes a bit when I get to my females because as females, we usually let emotion drive our actions. So instead of learning to deal with our emotions, it is repressed to deal with at a later time.
I mean, when I write Ranger (and he's pretty alpha) I still allow him to express emotion, he still has feelings. But when writing Kiki, she feels it, she denies it and she goes numb. It's kind of like she takes it in, she takes a deep breath and she lets it go. But instead, she doesn't let it go, and it simmers on low until she can really think about it.
MM, seriously, take the rum away.
I dunno. I think at times I'm crude enough to sound like a guy. *shrug* I don't know what that barrier would be. Example?
I love when the heroine rescues the hero. I'm writing a part now that Dex and Kiki went to do some snooping together and Dex wanted Kiki to let him handle it and Kiki told Dex where to go that he needed to stay out of her way and in their arguing Kiki gets "hurt" and Dex ends up nursing her (very sarcastically) through the night.
I love Dex & Kiki's mottos. I identify with Kiki's; and Dex's just cracks me up.
From the bits I've read of Dex--and heard of him, he pushes the limits of beta. I know with Kiki being the alpha--and she's ALPHA--he was going to have to be a different breed or otherwise they'd kill each other. And Kiki would win.
But Dex seems more Gamma--or whatever Machivellian version of male that's not really beta and not really alpha. He struck me as like, "No, I'm not alpha enough to top your alpha, but I'm more patient and sneakier than you--and I will win and you'll never even know when it happened." (But I could be wrong.)
He is. Dex is very very sneaky.
I love Alpha heroines!
Sin mentioned Ivy from Kim Harrison, but I might argue that Rachel is the alpha - or also one. That provides a good bit of tension in their relationship - both alphas who don't know how to bend.
Sin, I started a Harlequin Blaze last night that is awesome and you might want to read. It perfectly handles the "in love from afar for years" and the heronine has no idea that he has been helping her to become a new woman and let herself live again. It's Shaken and Stirred by Kathleen O'Reilly.

Alpha females--I expect my alpha females to be a lot like Sin's. Or Anita Blake. They have emotions--but they don't discuss them--and in times of crisis, they block them completely and go a sort of numb until the end of the job. And they never, ever just fall apart and start crying. If anything, they just get more pissed off.
Favorite Alpha Females:
I liked Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett). She was a good one.
I believe Elinor from Sense & Sensibility was the alpha of her crew--though she was a quiet alpha. But she was leader of her family; and she was very good at keeping her emotions separate from what needed to be done, sacrificing for the greater good; and guiding her family. (I'm speaking of movie version; I couldn't tell you from book version.)
Marianne--not really a leader or a person of sacrifice, but definitely someone who knew what she wanted and went after it. She had alpha tendencies, but because emotion ruled so much of her decisions and behavior, I don't think she was alpha-alpha. I don't think she was very beta either. I don't really of betas as "emotional tornadoes" as Marianne seemed to be.
Oh, in the Hermione and Ron pairing: Hermione is the alpha and Ron is the beta--and I love them together. *LOL* Well, Hermione is a little emotional...but she's definitely the leader of that pair because I don't know if Ron could dress properly otherwise... But Ron can be leader too...and can be surprising.

I love that. That's what I'm trying to accomplish with Naomi, my current heroine, but I don't do alpha female well. I have a CP at school who said she spent most of her time cowering in fear. Which is *not* alpha. So I'm going back and making her buck up *g*

I think that's why I stick with the Anita Blake series even if occasionally the books become one big orgyfest with no subplot other than another orgy. I'd rather have a gruesome murder to solve--and the orgyfest as a subplot. All the while though, Anita is Anita. She does have emotions because we know all about them, but she doesn't share them--unless forced--and the men in her life are so much more beta than she is.
I think what is interesting is that though Anita is the stronger character--the one most likely to save any of the others and its basically expected of her, the men (betas) are presented in such a way that they almost seem stronger or as strong as Anita because they are able to process their emotions and not repress them. It's interesting to see that balance.
Pretty soon the only thing I'm gonna be able to type is a bunch of slurred words that have to do with rum and grandpas.

I must have some kind of mind block on pinning down characters by alpha or beta. I just can't do it. :) I mean, some writers plot and some don't (hmm, I heard this debate somewhere before), but, whether I'm off base and comparing apples to oranges, it's the same thing in my head about alpha or beta. Why can't there be both in the same character? Like in that game Scruples with questions (i.e., would you tell a friend if you saw her husband having lunch with another woman?) Yes, no, or it depends. I always wanted to answer "It depends." There's always a factor...how good of a friend is it? Did you know the woman and know it was a work colleage?, etc. etc.
I latched on to the concept of motto and I love how Sin decribed it as "to help compass your character’s motivation." I can also see how knowing your character is alpha or beta is another compass. I'll have to think about it some more. LOL
Melissa, the gamma talk is the trying to pin down the inbetween an alpha and a beta character. I think we all have our own classifications for what each represents to us as a writer so I think you just have to think about what type of characteristics you write into your heroine and hero and that will tell you if they take charge or they follow.

I think it's hard to pin because no one person is one thing all the time. So even your alpha is going to go beta on you at some point; every beta has an alpha moment. I think you have to go with, what traits do my characters show most consistently? Are they leaders or followers? Do they ask permission or do they get it later when it's too late to do anything about it? Does circumstance happen to them or do they make circumstances happen?
I don't know if this is necessarily true, but I think of alphas as those who ACT and betas who REACT. Betas seem to me to be the kind to roll with whatever and make the best of it. Alphas would never let Fate have that much control over their lives--they'd ACT first and then react according.
Betas are the kind who don't go looking for trouble, but will REACT if it's thrown in their path--and then act accordingly to solve the problem.
(This could be way off though because in Heroes' Journies, heroes are basically always the type to refuse to go on the journey--and it's only when they have no other choice that they go on the journey.)

That's a powerful realization for a strong heroine. :) I read a historical western story once about a very damaged heroine -- not your traditional romance because she was a prostitute - and not a former prostitute but a working prostitute (at the beginning). Then she came to live on the hero's ranch (can't remember how) and talk about PATIENCE in the hero. And often she would run, even back to the brothel. Always he would go get her back. She definitely had the "I don't deserve it" motto. I recall that the ending didn't work for me - too MUCH of a character arc to turn her into a missionary at the end! (she ran one last time and then the hero found her in a missionary) - - but it left an impression. I'd still say that BOTH were mostly alpha characters though. :)

Wow, Melissa. That's one helluva story arc for one book. Very interesting though. I've always been a fan of the non-traditional story.
I read that as missionary position thought that wasn't much of a stretch for a prostitute.

I'm gonna work a blog 'bout how I am all my characters...but I'll save that for later...
I b'lieve the diff'rence between alpah males and alpha females aint' the denial of emotion, but the handlin' of it in decision makin'. An alpha male will look at emotional repurcussions as a secondary casualty. A female alpha is more likely to look at emotional repurcussions as a primary casualty or in equal measure to the rest.
When you have an alpha female who denies her emotions, that becomes part of her reaction. You see how it plays into actions she takes. An alpha male who denies his emotions really shuts them off. The female has an emotion rise and says "Later." The male has an emotion rise and says "Never."
Female - This is important, I'll think about it later, right now I have to ...
Male - Stupid emotion gets in the way. Go away, I have something I need to do...

On the differences between male and female alphas, I agree, but I think it can be switched around, especially with a "save the world" heroine. My heroine in THE DUKE'S ANGEL, had the male: Stupid emotion gets in the way. Go away, I have something I need to do…
She needed to save the world. But then she forgot. lol

No worries, I write myself in some of my characters. That's why I think I write a terrible Stephanie Plum. I make her way too alpha. I'm alpha myself, but I hide so many vulnerabilities. My heroines are usually the same.

I like the idea of the roles reversing. I think in most successful real world relationships (not that I've had any) that the roles change all the time. I'm very independent and a bit of an alpha, but sometimes it would be nice not to have to be the person in charge all the time.
It makes sense that an alpha character would find some relief in knowing someone else is carrying the ball for a while.

I think it would drive him or her crazy. At least in the beginning, because the alpha needs to be in control. terrio - I was a late comer to Bones - now I'm addicted! BUT, I'm having a hard time when a show comes on knowing where it fits in the timeline.
I need to get the DVD's to watch from beginning to now. Drives me crazy to jump bakwards in time with the reruns I'm watching.
Back on point, I do think the h/h jockeying for position in the relationship adds great conflict. Booth and Bones are masters (alphas) of different parts of their lives and worlds. Bones is constantly trying to learn how Booth does things because she can't admit that she couldn't be better at it if she just learned how.
I like the aspect of having two alphas that rule in different parts of their lives. It's hte give and take of the alpha role I find interesting.
I came to the show late too, but caught up by watching reruns on TNT. Now, I can't find a single episode I haven't seen. But it is odd to bounce back to the first season when they were getting to know each other. And before Angela and Hodgins got all hot. (BTW, am I the only one who thinks Hodgins is hot?)
